Campfire Audio Ara

Guys,

Thanks for pointing this out, it is a typo, as well as our other sensitivity measurements methods being old. This was something I had been meaning to correct but in the dust up in our launch during the pandemic I missed doing so, apologies.

We measure now and express in volts, the drive needed to reach one pascal @ 1 kHz (94 dBSPL) then state the drive in mVrms needed to achieve 94 dBSPL @ 1 kHz. We feel that this is more meaningful than other ways of expressing sensitivity, and also more meaningful than how we use to show it. We will update the sensitivity in the specifications accordingly. Thanks again, and here are the sensitivity specs for the three new models:
  • Ara: 94 dB SPL @ 1kHz: 7.094 mVrms
  • Solaris 2020: 94 dB SPL @ 1kHz: 6.54 mVrms
  • Andromeda 2020: 94 dB SPL @ 1kHz: 7.01 mVrms
John Siau wrote a great piece on sensitivity measurements over at Benchmark that I think does a good job at explaining this. Here's an excerpt from it:

How can I judge loudness from headphone sensitivity specifications?
Headphone manufacturers have different methods for specifying headphone sensitivity. This makes direct comparisons difficult without doing some math.
Sensitivity is often expressed as dB SPL at 1 mW (acoustic output as a function of input power). This "power sensitivity" specification makes comparisons complicated. This specification tells us nothing about the loudness of the headphones at a given voltage unless we also know the impedance of the headphones.
In contrast, Sennheiser specifies sensitivity in terms of dB SPL at 1 Vrms (acoustic output as a function of input voltage). Sennheiser's "voltage sensitivity" method takes impedance out of the equation and allows direct comparisons without making calculations.
"Power sensitivity" must be converted to "voltage sensitivity" before we can directly compare the loudness of our headphones.

Here's a link to John Siau's entire article: https://benchmarkmedia.com/blogs/application_notes/14017381-headphone-impedance-and-sensitivity

Jude also wrote some more great information about measuring headphone sensitivity, as this topic can be confusing. Here's a link to that: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sen...essions-thread.197776/page-2669#post-13803816

Sorry for any errors and for any confusion. Again, we'll be updating the sensitivity specs on our website accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Ken

Thanks, now it makes perfect sense. Ok, in other words, it means actually nothing has changed in sensitivity for ARA compared to previous models, it‘s almost the same as Andromeda, as would be expected. This explains why it was reportedly easy to drive, even though the spec suggested something different.

Unboxing experience/initial impressions up on the blog. Repost from the Campfire 3 IEM launch thread. Some sample pics below.

Indeed.

It's a sexy looking case, but not as sexy as these titanium beauties. I feel like I need a flux capacitor.

Sound impressions vs. Andro?
Can't help you, unfortunately. No Andro here. It's my first Campfire review unit. I didn't want to ask for their whole lineup without them knowing me for a bit.

Can't wait to test the Ara and 2020 variants of the Solaris & Andromeda soon once the samples are shipped out. At the moment, my favourite Campfire IEM is still the MW10 which is the best in my opinion. Quite curious how the Ara will stack up against the MW10 and SE: Gold in particular. Will give my impressions once I can compare them. :)

I have the Andro SS, V2 and the Gold. Spent sometime with the Ara and the Andro 2020 at the shop today.

The Ara is very similar to the Gold, but with a slight sparkle up top and a bit tammer low end. I would put the Ara right in between the Andro Gold and SS. Quite pleasing to my ears but didn't push me over to get them as I already have the Gold and SS (Andro v2 was lost by my daughter.....). The Andro 2020 has a slightly better bass than the V2 and very clear top end like the V2, I am contemplating getting them to replace the Andro v2 which was lost......

Hey guys, just posted up my review of the Solaris 2020 on Everyday Listening. I included extensive comparisons to CFA's trio of flagships - the Andro 2020, Ara and OG Solaris in addition to competitors from other brands. I went back to the drawing board to include a few more photos of the Solaris 2020 (below) alongside Campfire's other shells just so readers can better gauge its size.

I think there’s a negative stigma about refreshes, especially one released so soon after such a significant product launch. However, the Solaris 2020 feels like a new earphone to me, removing all significant barriers holding critics/buyers back from the original. The ergonomics are a world apart from its predecessor and the sound is more natural to my ears, especially through the midrange. I hope this review helps some readers out!
