Does anyone know if the 25 SP headband would fit on the 25-1 speaker elements? It's much cheaper to buy the parts from Sennheiser and assemble it.

And which cable is best?

I don't know about cables, but I know the general design of both...
 
Considering that the SPs are a rod and tube design, they'll never fit the 25-1 elements unless you figure a way to modify them, which will destroy any sense of durability unless you are really handy with tools and design. This is not to mention that the 25-1s use a flat notched sizing system, which seems to be different from the SPs. 

TBH you are probably better off getting a pair of used 25-1s and not building with parts...
