BeyerDynamics DT990 600 ohms vs 250 ohms

The DT990/600 might be a TAD too little depending on your scale. I used to play the bass and tuba so bass is definitely my thing. However, I hate bass that takes too much from the music. The DT990/600 can be just perfect on some songs but just a tad too little. Overall I don't think it'll be a problem but from my experience the DT990/600 is definitely a step up from the 250 version.

hows the bass on the dt990 and dt880? i will be amping them with a musiland 02 monitor that i have not purchased yet. how are the mids and such? i listen to a lot of rap/hip hop/acoustic/rock/punk rock and such. to give a good example of how much bass i like, if there was a scale, 5 being average bass and 10 being uber basshead, id possibly be around a 7ish, maybe 7.5. which one do u think ill like the most?

Complete opposite? I guess I missed something here, but I don't see that complete opposite opinion.

I just received my DT990 600 ohm from headphonesolutions.com today. I'll be doing an unboxing and brief hands-on with them and should have it uploaded tonite on my youtube channel. Damn, I can't wait to get my Hat Peed Thingee to test them out!

**Edit: uploaded video!

Can't wait to get my hands on mine, my MANUFAKTUR should arrive this monday.

For me, the bass on the DT 880 was just too little, that is why I preferred the DT 990. Though the DT 880 was more natural sounding to me (with less bass) and with more dynamics

Please note that this was on the 250 ohm version of the DT 880 so I can't comment on the 600 ohm version.

350 ohms.

Confusing.
The first DT880 and DT990 were all 600 ohm.
Are we talking here about the vintage 600 ohm DT880/990, or the manufacture ones (from the Beyer webshop)?

Question for folks with experience with both the 600 and 250 ohm 990.

Does the 600 ohm have less of a bass hump than the 250? I auditioned both the DT770 600ohm and DT770 250ohm and the 600 ohm had a much flatter response in the bottom end. Does it work the same way with the 990?

Did you had the DT770 Pro 250 ohm, or the Premium consumer edition 250 ohm?
The pro is bass heavier.
I found not much difference between the premium 250 and 600 ohm's bass.

There might have been a little extra prominence in the bass of the 250 ohm version, but we're not talking huge amounts.

Newer 250 ohm DT990s are improved from the ones that were being sold at the start of this thread a few years ago. I've been able to directly compare a DT990 250ohm from 2007 and one from this year, and the difference was surprising. The treble wasn't as piercing and hot in the newer version, the bass had a little more power. Then I exchanged the 2010 250ohm phones for the 600ohm version, and the difference wasn't nearly as striking. Perhaps less distortion, cleaner sounding, but without direct comparisons, such very subtle differences would be hard to pinpoint with any accuracy. I'll simply say that I don't think the differences between the 600ohm and 250ohm versions that you read about in threads dating back to 2007 or earlier are very representative of what you'll see today. Newer 250ohm DT990s are simply improved from older ones.

Thank you for your comments and input. I really liked the sound of the DT990 250ohm when I heard them last week . It has a solid foundation and great clarity in the midrange and treble. I don't really want to guild the lily with the 600 ohm version if there is not much of a sonic difference. But I should be able to audition and compare the two sometime this week.

I appreciate your help.

I have had the DT990 600 ohm version for about 3 years.  When I first got them they were very bright in the treble.  But once run in, they are in a word, AWSOME!  I worked in the HiFi industry for many years, and sold many pairs of SR125, 325, HD600/HD650, etc.  I never really enjoyed music through headphones, and always became fatigued by them after an hour or so.  Also headphones seemed to offer a more artificial although clean, presentation.

The DT990 600ohm offer real dynamics, drive, bass weight, (without being overblown or loose), clarity of midrange and extension and clarity of treble.  They are a very exciting listen and real entertainment.  I like to be involved in the music rather than having something going on at a distance.  The Beyers certainly entertain!

I recently started to mod my Xiang Sheng 708B using this site as reference.  Each change of valve and wire has been very clear to hear.  The sound is improving with each change.  I am now waiting for more components to arrive.
