Cool,

I would say it's more "V" to the left and "U" to the right. If you are considering an AK DAP, the newer ones have a preset on the EQ for the custom T5P AK version. I tried that on the T51i and really surprised how well that tamed the highs and warmed up the sound. Lots of used AK DAPs in classified.

As for sound isolation that someone was asking earlier. I just did a 5 hour flight and it does a good job of sound isolation on most music genres that are moderate volume. I also did not have to take these off to hear the flight attendant and successfully ordered a drink. Can definitely hear myself talk too. The sound does not bleed out either according to the person sitting next too me. My IEMs isolate better but I have to take at least one earpiece off to have a conversation.

These arrive tomorrow. I can't wait. I had to return the Oppo PM-3 & Oppo HA-2 amp/dac. The Oppos were the best headphones I've heard to date, but I just really need a main for my subway commute in NY. I listen to music at home sparingly. I've grown tired of sticking IEMs in my ear canals, even though I adore my Aurisonic Rockets. I hope these beyers are sufficient. The cable durability is now my only concern since it looks like these are really comfortable unlike most on-ears.

The T51i is a great subway companion, but I am curious - What about the Oppo PM3 did you find was problematic on the subway? They consider those their "portable" model.

Is it even fair to compare these to much less expensive portables like Senn PX100/200 or in ear like the Shure 200's?  $300 is out of my comfort zone but I would really like a pair of truly beautiful portable 'phones.

I haven't listened to any of the cans you list, but usually the biggest jump in audio quality is from $100 to $500 and then diminishing returns from there. You can pick up the T51i from Amazon for about $260 or if you want to save more and like a flatter sound the studio version is the DT1350 and it is on close out for $165 after rebate:

One word of advice on Beyer rebates. The instructions show one UPC code that you have to include on the rebate form. However, the written instructions state you also need to cut out the serial#. Make sure you include both the UPC and the larger serial number in your form.

So I just recieved the AP100 and I agree it's a better match for the t51i because of it's brighter overall signature. I also own both versions of the X3, and thier sofware based EQ's are not very effective, so simply changing the Eq setting is not really the solution in this case.

I realize that most folks get the T51 for portable use, but I recently got a cheap tube amp - Little Dot 1+ and the combination is pretty amazing. You just read the tube rolling thread for sound profile you want and just enjoy.

...and then you roll in a different op amp (MUSES01 or 02)!

I use mine for PC use too and will continue to unless I buy some really nice stationary phones which I doubt will happen anytime soon.  Mine just hook up into a little Fiio E10K that sits on my desk so I don't have to worry about the short cord length.  With the hardware bass-boost enabled on the E10K and the EQ flat it sounds amazing.

Okay, another point of comparison...  Grado SR225i vs the T51p anyone?

Trying to find an upgrade to my Sennheiser PX200's.  The Senn's are good but I'm ready to step up to a more analytical sound.

Very different. The SR225i are bright, clean and open, but have little in the way of soundstage. They are very easy to drive. As they have almost total sound leakage, they are not really suited to portable use.

The T51p have a warm, dark, almost HD650- like signature. They isolate extremely well, but need an amp (or a powerful specialist DAP) to give of their best (IMO). Driven properly, they offer a superior soundstage and plenty of detail. For a portable, they scale extremely well.

Also, don't forget the HD25.... If you want a bright, aggressive sound in a portable form factor with good isolation, these could also be an option.

Woops.... my hands just ordered a T51p somehow. Maybe it's because I sold my Amperiors a few weeks ago and have missed the DT-1350 since I sold them. Time to try something new and getting some headphones suitable for bringing with me on summer vacation plus a lot of other good arguments, suddenly made my hands move away from the work spreadsheet they should have been typing in instead....
