Beyerdynamic T5 (3rd Generation)

Because ive had them and returned them. They are muddy mess with peaky higher mids, no trebles, boomy mid bass and even the sub bas doesnt go as low as it should.
They have a very nice soundstage for the closed backs tho.

l agree with everything you said and it was quite a shock to me as I am so used to hearing Beyerdynamic being so focused on highs and separation, this muddiness is not their usual affair. I did salvage them though when I hooked it up to my Hifiman EF400 which is kind of a brighter sounding amp and it brought back some of the clarity I was badly missing on my warmer amps. I won’t say I’m still not a bit disappointed but it sounds alot better now and there is still strong dynamics backing it, i’m not ready to toss them aside just yet. I think ultimately it really, really works well for guitar-heavy, bassy rock music but is a bit lacking for other genres due to weaker and hazy mids. Listening to Tool schism now and it does manage to leap out like a caged animal at you.

I would return them. There is no point in fixing the broken headphones with an amp/dac. Beyerdynamic really fu**ed up with this crap and they need to know.
For me personally its an insult. This company exists over 80 years and they are not able to produce a decent flagship. I feel like there are two teams there- one is responsible for the over ears and second makes the iems. The Xelentos OG and 2nd are one of their best products, they are really amazing.
They really need to look at chinese companies if they want to stay competitive.
I will be selling brand new Focal Radiance soon if ure interested. They are leagues above these beyerdynamics.

Honestly the new Beyer flagships are love/hate, not much middle ground between them. I personally like them, though moreso the T1.3 than the T5.3. I do know the Pro and Audiophile/consumer division is different though. Their pro headphones sound very different than the consumer ones but none of the pro ones are able to be balanced without modding. Which is a bummer as their pro headphones appeal to more people tuning wise. Wouldn’t be surprised if the iem team is different too (no experience with their iems).

I actually picked up a Radiance few weeks ago; honestly I find It more pleasurable to listen to than my Utopia which says it all. I think people are sleeping on it due to their snobbery of the Bentley logo on it or get the impression it’s just a branded cash grab. You never see it when it’s on your head anyway.

So having the Radiance and the Utopias i can see no point in keeping the t5p 3. They are inferior in every way.
Im still considering selling the Radiance because i really like them but i also have the Monarch Mk2 which is one of the best if not the best iem/headphone ive listened to. I even compared them to the Utopias, Stellia, Abyss Diana, Meze Empyrean and ive found the Monarchs more natural sounding than all of them.
But surprisingly, the Radiance comes quite close to the Monarchs. It isnt as full bodied in mids and it doesnt have as deep subbass but overall impression isnt far away.

I might be interested in your Focal Radiance. They've been on my radar for a long time.

The T5.3 too but at the price of €999, not really cheap. I used to have the T5p.2 but the shrill treble was not something I like. The treble of the Amiron Wireless is better IMO.

We’ve discussed this again and again in this thread, but the voicing of the T1/T5 3. gen was a very conscious decision by Beyerdynamic. And they are happy with the response from their target group, which happens not to be audiophiles… this is not my idea, but stems from talking to several people at Beyerdynamic.

I’m not into open headphones, so I’d rather be interested in the T5 only. Unfortunately that seems to exhibit too much upper bass for my liking, making it rather probable I’d not keep them. Therefore I did not order a pair and unfortunately never had a chance to just try them out. On Thermotherapien hand I really liked their new DT700… yes, consumer and pro audio divisions are rather separate.

I wasn't aware that any Beyerdynamic cans could do that! Those I'm familiar with are rather resolved products.
I personally didn’t find them muddy, I’ve heard many muddy headphones and the T1.3/T5.3 weren’t some of them to me. They do have a lot of bass and upper bass which is off-putting and overwhelming to many but always found them resolving. Their tuning is extremely divisive among the audiophile community.

That is interesting but it does explain the shift I noticed in their consumer headphones.

I heard and liked the DT 700 Pro X myself and imho it’s more in line with what much of the audiophile community wants. Trying out the DT 900 Pro X soon hopefully.

Upgraded from DT1770 to T5 Gen3. Happy! Like night and day! These drivers are amazing, with EQ you can do kind of everything. Note, if standart softskin pads will be replaced to velour (as I did, took them from DT1770) - low end will be rolled off. But again, as drivers are very capable, just with EQ we can "fix" this. Im using ADI-2 DAC FS and LG V60. On both need to add from 5 to 7 dB on low end.

Sure, if you wish to tame that density a bit, Matt's hybrid is the way to go :)
Just an update that I put money on pads first. I purchased Dekoni elite hybrid and elite velour. Elite hybrid helps on relieving bass dense and improving comfort on ears. It seems to have the wider area inside the pads than the original. I will keep burning to see which cable I should go because the sound is quite neutral for now. Thanks for your suggestion...iFi
