I currently have HyperX Cloud 2 Headphones and I wanted to get an upgrade. I was wondering which headphones would be better for me since I mostly play games and listen to music. I'm not looking for a perfectly flat studio sounding headphones.

No experience with the Audio Technica, but I've had Beyerdynamic DT770s for several years, and I find them to be solid all-around cans. I find my 80-Ohm Pros to have a bass bias, while my older 250-Ohm version is more neutral sounding. I like both for different reasons.

Do you think that the 80 ohm version would be a good pair of headphones for gaming? Does the bass in that version overwhelm the other frequencies?

I'd say they'd be fine for gaming. More deep bass than mid bass to my ear, but not particularly overwhelming. Clarity is fine, and I actually use a pair with my digital piano for practice sessions, and note separation and articulation are fine. For a while, I used the 250 ohm pair with an Antlion ModMic, and that combo made for a nice gaming headset.

Do you use the HyperX Cloud 2's USB adapter or plug the headphones directly into the PC?

The DT770 (all versions) really need to be used with a decent headphone amplifier, to sound their best.
The WS1000is is easier to drive.
I own the DT770, but I believe you would find Soundmagic HP151 headphones to be an improved DT770.
Both the HP151 and DT770, have strong bass/treble, so not the "flat" I believe your talking about.
Check out the Beyerdynamic T70 (buy used), great clarity and balanced sound.

I use the USB adapter with the Cloud 2's but I have a FX-Audio Dac-X6 amplifier that I believe would be strong enough to power the 770's. Over the 770's and the HP151's, you would recommend the HP151's?

I own the DT770 closed headphone and the open DT880 & DT990.
And the Soundmagic HP200 (open) headphones.
To me the HP200 sounds like an improved DT990.
So the HP151 should sound like an improved DT770.

That does make sense. It looks to me that the earcups on the HP151 aren't as nice as the original 770s so can you recommend any replacment pads?

Not sure what other pads work on the HP151.
