Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

Asking a question without trying to look the idiot. Is there a obvious, visual way to tell the two pads apart from each other. From just looking at them? I know I have the pads on that I prefer, but am not sure which of the two they are.

The A pads (analytical) are not as thick as the B pads ( balanced). They also vary in the amount of holes they have on the underside of the pads.

By the way I'm curious about the sound differences between the old A-pads and the new A-pads; from 12 holes to 4 holes, I expect at least some differences.

Would this headphone be good to complement the Oppo PM-1? Budget about £500 max. As much as I'm totally overcome by the PM-1 sound, all warm, analogue and totally immersive sometimes I crave something a bit more energetic and neutral/analytical. Will be run through a Chord Mojo and laptop using JRiver.

I feel that it would be. I haven't listened to the PM-1 but from your descriptions of it, the 1990 should sound more neutral, especially with the A pads. As always I would try to listen to it first if possible or at the very least purchase from somewhere that has a nice return policy.

That's good to know, from what I've read the 1990 sounds a bit like a cheaper (maybe less capable) version of the HD800.

Having heard both I certainly wouldn’t describe the DT1990 as less capable. The way I see it is as follows.

The DT1990 is an incredibly accurate headphone that relays music with precision to your ears.

The HD800 is an incredibly accurate headphone that relays precise noise to your ears. There isn’t a musical bone in the HD800’s body, but it is a fantastic tool if you’re in the production game.

Perfect summation in describing the sonic differences between the DT1990 and HD800 Slaphand. Of all my other headphones (Sennheiser HD650, Beyerdynamic DT880/DT990 and Audio Technica R70X) I find myself almost exclusively using the DT1990. It is an endgame headphone for the foreseeable future.

I think the HD800 is a very musical headphone, but it depends on the genre of choice and the rest of your audio chain needs to be well though out. For production I would use a HD600 since its one of the headphones that most consider neutral and its what may studios use.

What kind of music DT 1990 is suited for? How good are they with jazz and classical compared to something like HD 600/ 650?
They work for everything to be honest. They are some of the most detailed headphones I have heard. Put on the A-Pads and your classical music should come to life.

I agree completely. I think the DT1990's are some of the most versatile headphones around, and can 'do' all genres equally well.
Unlike the HD800's. I find the 800's perfect for classical, but when listening to rock, pop, even jazz, I gravitate towards the DT1990's. BUT even with classical, the Beyers sound brilliant, and a lot more 'forgiving' then the 800's.

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on which one to choose. DT 1990 or DT 1770? RIght now I have a Sennheiser HD598, Sennheiser HD6XX (HD650 I believe), Sennheiser G4ME ONE, AKG Q701, and beyerdynamic DT 990. I need a closed back headphone for the times I want to block out noise or don't want what I'm listening to leak out, but that's not the case often.

My plan was to sell my DT 990, purchase a DT 1990 and a DT 770 Pro 80 ohm (I can get it for 100). But now I'm not so sure. Maybe I should just get a DT 1770 and use my HD6XX when I want to use a open back headphone? or is DT 1990 superior enough to a HD6XX that it'd be worth it settling on a DT 770 for closed back?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The DT-1990's are semi-open and sound really, really good. When I had the HD 650's I thought they were too laid back even when I drove them balanced. I much prefer the sound signature of the DT-1990's over them. With you needing a closed can the DT-1770's might be the way to go for you. But when I was doing my research on the DT-1770's the majority of the people who listened to both preferred the DT-1990's over the DT-1770's. All I can tell you is DT-1990's replaced the majority of the mid-fi cans I use to own. That list includes the Sony MDR-Z7, Sennheiser HD 650, Philips Fidelio X2's, Fostex TH-X00 Purple Hearts. I think the DT-1990's are that good. But let your ears decide.

Hi all, I'm wondering if someone here can tell me whether the clamping force on the DT 1990 matches the one in the HD600/650. I've gone through all (!) of the 68 pages here and I realize that it's quite comparable; but if the DT 1990 are even a nudge less clamp than the HD600 I'm seriously considering taking the plunge. Thanks!
