Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

It all depends on your music tastes. The Elear are fun headphones. I find them excellent for metal and hard rock, way better than the DT1990 in fact. Though, they perform poorly with classical music and jazz.

I also have the T5p 2nd and I think that they are better all-rounders and I like them more than the DT1990. However, I do enjoy more the Elear when I want to headbang for a while.

I think it also depends on how you hear, and what your tonal preference is as well. The truth is that I do use the DT1990 mainly for classical so that may well explain why I would choose the DT1990 over the Elear.

I'll have to have some assistance with some blind A/B testing some day soon to see if I can pick up on it. Anyone have the DT1770s? I'd looovee to try them out, closed headphones with these drivers? Sploosh.

To be honest, having tried and owned the DT 1770s, it is making me hesitate about getting the DT 1990s. I did not like the big fat upper bass that made the sound feel a bit hollow. Another thing was uncomfortable pads, the worst that I've experienced among the Beyerdynamic headphones. The guy from Z Reviews was hyped about the "sub-bass" of the DT 1770 but I did not hear it.

You ran the 1770 with an amp? Im a basshead and the 1770 hits very deep.

Dear, I got an amp before my first hifi class headphones. Maybe it is there when listening to tracks designed for sub-bass rumble, but otherwise everything I noticed was the *oooompffff*.
Guess so, it pounds close to the TH900.

The pads are deeper and more comfortable on the DT 1990, the DT 1990 has some of the most comfortable pads I've tried on any Beyer while the DT 1770 had some of the worse. If you want tighter bass put on the analytical pads. I had those problems with the DT 1770 as well, the DT 1990 didn't have those problems.

Yes, mine did come with them on, the velours sadly just aren't deep enough but they sounded better to my ears than the pleathers, and the pleathers while deep enough were too stuffy for me personally and I found hurt the sound as it emphasized the hollow effect a bit more.

I don't like the pleather pads of the DT1770 (I always prefer velour), but the velours are very comfortable and are very similar to the 1990's velour pads.

Not sure why you think the 1990 has some of the best pads and the 1770, some of the worst when the velour pads on both are extremely similar. 1990's are no more deep than the 1770's either.

It has nothing to do with me thinking, I own both. Because my DT 1770 velour pads are about half as deep as my DT 1990 pads, they do have some wear but they were never as deep or comfortable as my DT 1990 pads. I have a very early DT 1770 so it's possible the pads are different on newer pairs. I know they changed the pads on the DT 1990 rather quickly.

I hate to do it but I need to free up some funds so I have to sell my 1990's. I just bought a ZMF Atticus because of the $200 Can Jam discount. I will miss the Beyers, they have been awesome. I can't really afford to have more than one nice headphone at a time though.

I was aiming between these and the Elears as my next purchase, but I ultimately decided on these and have had them for about a week due to lower price point. Also was a bit influenced by some of the posts I read in this thread. Still might try out the Elears someday.

Gotta say, I really enjoy these cans. To me, the imaging is definitely the strongest point, and after that it'd probably be its dynamics. This really is a fun pair of cans, even though it can be used analytically.

I do think beyers in general have a reputation for excessive treble, which is probably why these get overlooked at times. I think they are gold, though.

I think a real strength is that they are offer great detail but never sounding too clinical or boring. Similar to what you said, they have energy and punch.

Re the treble - what's interesting is that some headphones with a supposedly laid back or darker sound are actually more fatiguing to me. I thought the Elear was excellent and super comfortable but it can be a little too dynamic. Odd thing to say I know.
