Beyerdynamic DT-1770: Product Info, Discussion and Impressions

This thread has so many references to quality issues relating to the drivers on the DT1770pro. I have emailed BEYERDYNAMIC Europe and asked if the Product Manager can comment on the quality issues. I will ofcourse post the reply from BEYERDYNAMIC. If i do not get a satisfactory response i might cancel my Amazon order as it just seems too much if a risk. Even if there is no problem initially it seems that many people have experienced issues months after usage.

The other scary/concerning point is - (what about driver issues at a lower degree which customers might be experiencing, but are just not aware of them), yet the audio quality is degraded on £370 headphones.

It's common for a product to have manufacturing defects. Hence, why we have warranties. If you buy it from a refutable store, then there should not be any risk.

Beyerdynamic has/had manufacturing issues (See the AKT8IE thread) but so far all my Beyers are still good.

I bought the T1 3 years ago and had to return it the next day after I bought it because their is no sound coming out from the right driver. It's not Beyer's fault though because the T1 I bought was modified by the shop to have removable cables. The shop replaced the unit and never had issues since.

My DT250 (bought from Amazon) is almost 3 years old now. Had to replace the wire but it's difficult to get it's unique connector from outside Beyer so I have to go DIY and use the stock connector and just replace the cable by soldering it myself. Played with different materials for damping the drivers for a bit. In the end the stock padding stayed and still working today.

My T51p is around 2 years old now but still working just fine. Although, it's not getting as much head-time lately.

My DT1770Pro is about 5 months old now. Been using it as my on the go headphone. It is taking a bit of a beating but no obvious issues yet.

Recently have the AKT8IE MK2, been breaking it in for almost 2 weeks now just to bring out any manufacturing defects early (considering the issues reported on MK1).

The last 2 still under warranties. If they break I just have to send it to my local dealer to have it replaced.

In short, the joy these headphones bring to me is more than enough to not worry about manufacturing defects. I tend to break-in my phones the first few weeks hoping any issues would surface sooner than later.

I only have great experiences with beyerdynamic. T90 Jubilee and DT770 LE doing their job for years and still look like they did on their first day. But you won't read many posts about things just working fine. So it's always a bit schewed to the ones complaining (rightfully so if they have a defective product). In electronics you usually have 2% failure rate - just abroad rule of thumb.

Cheers.

A rather broad statement. Some excellent manufacturing in China. Your beloved Pono is made in China.

Just going to agree with these three posts. :)

At least Pono is using quality components under the hood, same can't be said for some Chinese companies. When I have the choice I always go for German or Japanese made etc, over Chinese made, maybe I'm just bias but I somehow feel the quality is better in general, and there have been reports from people that do notice a change for the worse when a company shifts to Chinese manufacture, like AKG K702 made in Austria until a few years ago, now China, or Audio-technica AD900 made in Japan until a few years ago, now China. It's also nice to know that the person who built my expensive headphones etc is being paid properly and working under nice conditions :)

True, I would prefer to buy non-Chinese made myself, largely because Chinese made is more likely to suffer in terms of quality. It's really when they switch manufacturing from the country of origin to China that's disheartening. With AKGs, the shift from Austria to China was noticeable to me in terms of build quality as well as sound quality. I've owned numerous AKGs(huge fan of AKGs). And have compare Chinese vs Austrian on three different models and every single time the Chinese made pair suffered in terms of build and sound quality compared to the Austrian pair. There are excellent Chinese made products, but in my experience Chinese made or being shifted to Chinese made usually means inferior quality. Honestly the outsourcing of manufacturing to China, etc. has really reduced the quality of countless goods. All one needs to do is compare the quality of older and vintage products to modern products and how cheaply made modern products often are truly comes to light.

No, mine is still soft and flexible.

Damn - looks like a warranty job. Bloody German build quality.

On a serious note, if you bought yours from @sonicelectronix, they will probably be able to help you with a warranty claim. I had an issue with a HIFIMAN iem, and they swapped it out free of charge once they got it in stock. Only took two weeks, but would have been faster if they had the item on hand.

My email and reply from Beyerdynamic EHQ in Germany from the Product Manager regarding driver quality issues.

My email sent 27th of July:
"Hello,

I am very interested in purchasing the new BEYERDYNAMIC DT1770pro headphones but am concerned about a quality issue which has been referred to on "headfi" forum website.
There has been some issues about the right channel driver rattling and distorting after using the headphones. Please can you ask the Product Manager for the DT1770pro to comment on this point as I am really interested in purchasing them."

REPLY FROM BEYERDYNAMIC PRODUCT MANAGER (28th of July):
thanks for your request.
We had some quality issues with the DT1770 Pro but these mainly occured in the US and with one special production batch.
We now improved the testing method with our quality department to make sure that only correct headphones are shipped out.
If you will have some quality issues I’m also ready to assist you with getting a replacement or repair from your retailer with our distributor in the UK.

If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards,

Joscha Kretschmann"
