I sold my Amiron a while ago because i don't think it was worth the money. Sound is just medicore from my old X7ii. Could it be underpowered and need a more powerful amplifier?

The Amiron Home needs a good DAC and amplifier to sound its best. I run mine with an SMSL M8A DAC (Updated Version With ES9038Q2M), and an Audio-GD C-2 (2017 Edition) headphone amp, and the sound quality is excellent. Be aware that on Amazon the DAC says it is the first M8A edition with the ES9028Q2M. They just have not updated the listing. If you buy it now, it will be the new revision with the even better SABRE ES9038Q2M chip. Regarding the C-2, this headphone amp will power any headphone you want with ease. Just look at the power output of this puppy.

25 ohm: 9900MW
40 ohm: 8000MW
100 ohm: 3500MW
300 ohm: 1200MW
600 ohm: 600MW

You have the Ibasso DX200 with amp8 module? Or do I read your signature wrong?

Amp8 has a lot of power and drives most headphones very well. I use DX158 with the Amiron and don't have any complaints at all. The X7II with amp3b (balanced 4.4) is not far off the DX158 and also drives the Amiron acceptable. If you intend to keep your X7II you should buy the new amp3d module.

That said you can always get a "better" and more powerful dap or Amp. That's just a question about how much you want to pay :)

Hi Folks - new to this thread - just having acquired a new pair of headphones.

I am currently getting used to them moving from a 17 year old pair of HD600's. I do notice a pleasant difference but there is one area that makes me wonder if i have a defective pair.

For those who have access to it, when listening to Hans Zimmer's Time (from Inception) I find that the amirons seem to struggle with the overwhelming low bass when the music becomes louder from 2.54 onwards. It almost feels like clipping - the 600s don't give me the same wide soundstage but seem to be able to cope better with that section

Similar issue with London Grammar song Big Picture - there is some serious clipping going on. Now this could be just that these headphones are sensitive to badly mastered recordings but the 600's don't struggle with these songs.

Thoughts or anything i should try ?

Portable Amp is a soundblaster E5 but at home they are hooked up to a Denon 4300

You will not get a good headphone experience from many receivers. For instance, I own a DTR-80.3, which is an extremely high end 145watt x 9 receiver from 2011 with a 1160 power supply in it. In terms of true power, speaker driving ability, and sound quality, this puppy just destroys almost anything that comes out today. This receiver weights 53 pounds, and cost 3000 US. They don't make receivers like this anymore. Any receiver you buy today is all about "features", while cutting back on the quality of the power supply and amp section. It has a toroidal transformer in it as well. You will not find any receiver now with a 1160 watt power supply. With saying that, if I use the Amiron on it, it just does not sound anywhere near as good as when using my C-2 headphone amp. The headphone section on most receivers of the last 15 years is just an afterthought. Bass is far better on the C-2, along with everything else.

Thanks - will be on the lookout for something better then - might just pick up a mojo as can get a reasonable deal on it.

Does anyone have experience with that combo ? or the ifi XDSD - i don't want a full on desktop amp, don't have to room for it

I had the nano black label, and it drove them just fine, and sounded as good as the ZX300, but with greater versatility since you can use whatever player you like via your phone. M11 also drives em.

Thanks - managed to get an excellent in store deal on a chord mojo - problem definitely solved.

Downside - gear-lust mode now activated; the OH even started getting into listening to the headphones and had to grab them off her
