which DT880 version was it?
Anyway, to the others, could you please state what DT880 version you tried. Thanks. I'm intrigued by the HF-2 but of course there are different versions of the DT880 and all sound different.

It's the 2005 250 Ohm version. I've heard the 600 ohm version is better but it's priced in the same range with HD650 and given the price I'll take the latter at any time of the day.

Having the DT880/600 and the HD650, tbh, I would take my DT880/600 over them any day. Much more balanced sounding. The HD600 sounds better than the HD650 tbh.

A friend had both and he ended up keeping the HD650 because it has a better midrange to him.

Now as for the HD600 vs HD650, I won't say one is better than the other but the word different is more apt I think. The HD600 is more linear while the HD650 is more colored (in a good way).

All moot point of course because I prefer the HF2 over any of those.

I have the HF-2 and would really like to try the 880/600 but when I read the 880/600 thread, it seems the 600 ohm version is not only finicky but fairly expensive to get decent sound out of them. I have the Headroom Micro Amp (a/c version) and enjoy it paired with both my HF-2 and 701. I really don't want to invest a large sum in another amp and I'm not interested in tube rolling. which is a shame because the 880 is a headphone I'd like to try.

I had the DT880 250-ohm '03 and I did very much enjoy them. They're about as detailed as the HF2's but they have a wider soundstage and a less 'fun' tone. The treble is also brighter (although the overall tone isn't as bright IMO) and the bass is much nicer imo. It has a VERY nice texture and is tighter, although less in quantity. The mids on the HF2 are far superior though, compared to the slightly recessed DT880 mids.

I'm not sure which I prefer, from memory. The DT880's are WAY more comfortable. Most comfortable headphones I've ever worn, and I'm considering rebuying them based on that.

I have owned both (at the same time) and much preferred the HD650s. I did enjoy the DT880s, but IMO the HD650s were a better headphone with better treble and bass. I also enjoyed their laid back sound. I have since sold off the DT880s and will be keeping my HD650s (with SAA Equinox cable) until I finally upgrade to the HD800.

I agree that the highs on the DT880s can be a little metallic, but with a proper amp they can be improved upon.
