Those who are searching for a really amazing sounding Smartphone for a reasonable price should consider the Mi Note/Mi Note pro. I`ve had that phone before (Mi Note pro) and compared it with a Meizu Pro 5. Well, i was too stupid to turn the HI-FI setting (On Meizu it`s turned on by default) and sold it because i thought the audio quality was average.
Now i`ve bought it again because there was an awesome offer on ebay, and what can i say? Turned on the HI-FI setting, and that Phone destroyed anything that i`ve ever heard before in terms of audio quality, which would be the Meizu Pro 5, a Fiio x1, a fiio x3 (1gen), Nubia z9 max (which sounds very average) an LG V10 and a couple of Iphones and Xperia devices, mainly Xperia z2 and z3 and Ip.5s and Ip.6.

What`s even more awesome, Viper4android and dolby atmos are working flawlessly WITH the Hi-fi mode. As i said, the device sounds gorgeous by itself in HI-FI mode and is the loudest thing i`ve ever heard in my life while not loosing clarity even at highest volume, so i use viper/Dolby only to give it a bass boost, which is a little lacking in Hi-fi mode. Using a software mod like viper for anything else just degrades the sound quality and is not needed with such good hardware.

I compared that phone extensively with my Pro 5 and here`s what my ears think about it: The Pro 5 is of course a great sounding device, but it brings out too much of the upper mids and muffles it together with an ear piercing treble at higher volume. It can be very harsh on your ears when you listen to it for a longer time. It sounded a little bit "fuller" in a very few electro/techno songs, but for the rest, the Mi Note delivers more overall clarity, better treble/upper mids handling and more instrument separation. Voices also sound a tad cleaner and are better separated from the rest of the music. I`ve sold the Pro 5 now because the sound quality of the MI Note impressed me so much. Of course we all have different hearing, so what sounds better for me won`t necessarily sound better for you. The Pro 5 is still better than at least 90% of all the other smartphones in the audio department and is an excellent device by itself. Build quality is like a freaking tank, i dropped that thing countless times on beton , it grinded 5 meters on a concrete floor and still worked like a charm after that, so praise where praise belongs :).

Speaking about the V10 that gets praised so much by some people here, i`ll just give my personal impression about it (V10 fans, don`t be upset :)
Bought that phone to compare with the Meizu Pro 5, listened to it and sold it 4 days after. The Meizu Pro 5 was louder and sounded better overall. (And it`s faster, doesn`t heat up, etc etc.) For the rest like Xperia z and other phones without dedicated audio hardware:
They can have the best software setup, you can put as much viper and other mods on them as you want, but the result will always be inferior to devices with good audio Hardware. It will sound artificial and just not as good in comparison (unless you`re using cheap cans of course).

Great! My Mi Note Pro arrived yesterday and for $199 Brand New, it was a no-brainer.. The Aliexpress Seller also had the Mi Note on sale at the time for $149.

Can wait to test it out soon with my Zen 2.0. I also bought the B&O HiFi module because I was also planning to buy the LG G5. Was wondering if you had tried it as well.. Thanks for your post.

That`s indeed a great price. I`ve bought it for 220€ in used condition, but it`s barely three months old so still a great price. As i said it sounds great but lacks bass in HI-FI, so what i did is installing "Viper4android atmos sony beats edition 5.5" from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/themes-apps/viper4android-t2952137 You need TWRP because it`s a flashable zip.

You can use Viper4android to add some soft bass (i have "Viper Bass" set to 8 or 10) and Dolby atmos to add some hard bass (the most left side of the equalizer). I didn`t use dolby atmos at all, because it`s very sensible and the bass will eat up the highs and mids if you add too much, but it`s possible if needed. For the rest, i tried to play with all the different settings in both, but it`s better to keep them all off, they will just distort the sound.

I'm curious if the S7 (Exynos version) took a step backwards from the S6/Note5? I seem to remember that I was wowed by my S6 and then by the Note5, but I am definitely not getting that feeling from my Exynos S7. So either my ears have evolved and I know better sound when I hear it (yeah right, not likely!) or the S7 is sort of "meh." What do you guys think? I know some folks on here have had both.

I'd kill for a sound comparision between the Vivo Xplay 5 Elite and the ZTE Axon 7

EDIT: Just noticed we have this awesome Xplay5 Elite review here at headfi. It's basically the review GSM Arena didn't bother to make.

A few pages ago, there were indeed some users who stated the same thing.

Interesting, thanks.

it is a tough thing to review, the impedance scaling is both a curse, and a major asset.

I can say, although the volume scaling is crazy, add the soundmagic e80 to it (they're 64ohm, so switch on the high impedance mode without the need for any extra cables etc), and this is an absolutely killer unit...

Stuck in low impedance, or aux mode, it is good, but that's about it, and also if we consider due to the LTE bands used in most places, it doesn't play nice in most regions... It is very much a niche product that will end up with very few followers.

Thankfully the planets have aligned for me :)

Well I had a note 5, s6 and s7 exynos. The note 5 sounded absolutely amazing but I thought the the s6 and s7 sounded fairly poor. I sold the note 5 as I could only get 32gb here in NZ.

Just thought I'd give my thoughts on the LG V10 versus the Xiaomi Mi Note.  I actually think Xiaomi haven't really beaten the Mi Note (and the regular version doesn't have the overheating issues of the Pro).  The Mi Note also sounds good and I preferred it to the Meizu MX4 PRO when I directly compared them.  I can't compare the Mi Note and V10 directly, but I wouldn't say one is better than the other in audio; they have different sound signatures (from what I recall the Mi Note is warmer and similar to the HTC 10 in tuning).

Someone compare Lenovo Vibe X3 to Vivo XPlay 5 Elite?

EDIT: Is the Lenovo Vibe X3 actually worth it and better than LG V10??

For me, Yes, X3 is better than V10 to my ear.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.
I would refrain from using words such as "destroyed anything", this is too absolute and SQ is still as much a question of taste as technical superiority.

Your second paragraph is clearer in regards to what you prefer in the Mi Note Pro.
What is surprising for me is that both models (the Pro 5 and Mi Note Pro) share a lot of technical similarities, I wouldn't even be surprised of they actually share the same audio hardware implementation, knowing how chinese manufacturers work quite well.
I know it can still result in differences in the end, but it shouldn't be as large as you claim.

Anyway, as you say, the endresult will still be better than any smartphone without dedicated decoder/amp chips.
And the Pro 5 is just ligtning fast as a smartphone, compared to my current Huawei Mate 7 gold (the 3Gb version).
