Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H6 Discussion Thread

For those who are familiar with both versions of the H6, how does the sub-bass on the 1st gen H6 compare to the 2nd gen? The sub-bass on the gen 2 seems a bit above neutral to me (somewhat boosted), but from what I understand, the 1st gen H6 is meant to be lighter on bass. How would you describe the sub-bass on the gen 1 H6? Neutral or slightly rolled off or boosted?

It's definitely less. It still exists if your source has enough oomph and the song demands it though, i'd call it neutral. I'd also describe gen 2 as boosted.

I too have been curious about this comparison. I have owned the H6 Gen 1 for years now and have really enjoyed the bass presentation. In my opinion the bass is very resolving, fast, tight, and well extended. The H6 Gen 2, from what I have read and which has been said just recently here on this thread, sheds light on an elevated bass presentation indeed.

I am not a headphone fan but I love my h6 Gen 1 for the bass. Fully agree, on resolution and speed, though I don't find the bass that well extended unless I work in some eq.

Just rediscovered my H6 1st gen with my newly acquired ifi micro idsd bl. What a brilliant combo
That was my first audio pairing when I first got into this hobby. Awesome synergy for sure.

If I may ask, what was so special about it? I had a brief listen to the H6 a good while ago (with non-ifi stuff back then) and can't remember a thing :)

I found the h6 unremarkable when unamped. They obviously don't require an amp but they scale well. I also really loved the bass boost on occasion (easily one of the best implementations out there.)

OK so extra power and bass boost, gotcha. Thanks!

I too found the H6 to sound kind of blasé without amplification. However when hooked up to solid state or tube amplification it’s lights out! To be honest the H6 is my reference closed back headphone. I prefer open back headphones or iems overall. With that being said, I could not resist buying a new set of the H6 gen 1 special edition in hazel leather with a grey finish as a backup.

It’s a headphone which can take abuse . I tried Max volume of my chord mojo on them for minutes (not on my head) and the driver didn’t blow

Many are designed to take this kind of beating for some time

But let me ask you why did you stress your cans this much? Was it curiosity :D ?

FWIW: I couldn’t resist the 90th Anniversary model H6 1st gen (2015) in rose gold:beerchug:

Had to look that one up. That's one sweet looking headphone. Sadly, I can't really wear headphones that long. :frowning2: Glass wear that rotates between reading glasses and computer glasses often, not to mention hotspot behind my ear when wearing headphones. I even bought a pair of glasses that have super thin arms... bummer. But I still enjoy them from time to time for limited listening sessions.

My mobile setup a couple days ago:
