Balanced signature with slight warmth/color, strong punchy bass, sparkly treble, high isolation, mids not recessed

Very interesting. How would you compare the bass of the GR07 to the 215?
 
Obviously the treble on the GR07 is far better; perhaps its greatest strength based on what I've read. Your description of the midrange is excellent, tells me everything I wanted to hear .

I have to admit that at first when I listened to the GR07, I got a shock. To my then untrained ears, all I could hear (or not hear) was a lack of "bass." Compared to the slightly boomy and mid-bassy 215, the GR07 seemed almost bass light. Now, I don't know how I could have thought that with all the rich, textured, and deep bass I'm hearing. I guess you can't really fault the Beats generation because that's all they been trained to appreciate. I got a pair of Turbines recently, and I just couldn't stand them. The 215 has more mid-bass no doubt, but the GR07's bass is far better. Oh and don't get me started on the drums.

Hmm. Well the SE215s require eq in the subbass for my preference, but I consider the midbass too much. If the transition is that drastic and the impact is significantly less, I don't think I would really like the GR07 in the long run. The majority of my music is trance, and if I can't get a live, impactful feeling from the bass, they will bore me.

The issue is that the majority of the GR07's bass is sub-bass, with less than average amounts of mid-bass. That's why the initial perception I had was that it lacked bass. If what you value is lots of mid-bass then the GR07 probably isn't for you

Well I want more subbass than midbass, but having less midbass than "average" is probably a deal breaker. Based on what I've read, if it has less midbass than the SM2, then I'd go for the latter.

Okay, I would say based on an admittedly old memory it has less midbass than the SM2.

If you want something that has a less veiled presentation than the SM3, even punchier bass, more of an aggressive sound and faster speed -  at the expense of a little less micro-detail and less natural timbre, have a look at the Audio Technica Ck90Pro (or the new version the CK90Pro Mk2.) :3

I say just get the GR07. I think you'll really like them, but if not you should have little trouble getting rid of them on the FS forum.

Here's the thing that really has me leaning towards the SM2:
 
 

 

Lows

This is the frequency band where the SM2 is absolutely stunning. In terms of Impact, speed, depth, and deepness the SM2 is definitely ahead of the game. Lows are extremely quick, with an extremely powerful impact to them, only steps behind a properly sealed Sennheiser IE8. There’s no distortion or struggling to reach the lowest notes of the spectrum, everything is presented with a great depth and feeling to them. The lows on the SM2 are definitely beyond what the Triple Fi 10, UM3X, and Se530 are able to offer in the same situation and configuration.

I know that many people often move up to a more "mature" sound as they progress in understanding of sound, but the bottom line for me is having a fun signature. I want to enjoy my music, not dissect it.

The SM3 is in some ways a lot less neutral and more "fun" than the SM2. And as I said, consider the CK90Pro if you want something even more aggressive. I can tell you that I enjoy all kinds of signatures, and jump between something refined like the GR07 to bass heavy headphones like the Pro700. Don't be an apologist for your own preferences! :]

I hardly ever dissect my music with the GR07. However, since your main genre is EDM, I suggest asking i2ehan for advice.

I am definitely considering the CK 90 but I'm really afraid I will be underwhelmed by the GR07s bass quantity. I am currently reading reviews on the CK 90 and am hunting for some kind of comparison to the sm2.

Would anyone who has heard the SM2 be able to verify/refute that quote about its bass quantity?

Also is there anyone out there who has heard both the SM2 and the UM2 who could compare their bass quantity and overall signature?
