Another thing possible is to just smooth out a FR of an headphone. I am still in the learning process but I found that the EQ of the NightHawks based on the SkullCandy graph changes the sound without forcing the headphone on a totally different sound response. I think this could be more desirable.

Anybody compared a new nighthawk to a old used pair? Just to know if the sound changes from wow to meh after a year or two. I am planning to get them new, but I am worried about getting a replacement pad after a year or two.

Anybody can provide an insight on this? I am planning to get one soon. That's why.i am aware that sometimes a honest reply can lower the resale value of it. So someone can pm me also.

Anybody compared a new nighthawk to a old used pair? Just to know if the sound changes from wow to meh after a year or two. I am planning to get them new, but I am worried about getting a replacement pad after a year or two.

Anybody any insight on this? You can pm me if you think there is something bad which may lower the resale value of your headphone.

Comparing my very broken-in pair bought a couple of years ago with one I got a couple of weeks ago (still only 20 or so hours on it), same wood finish, same cable, and as far as I can tell, same pads-- I can verify that the sound is better with the broken-in pair. Although I like them right out of the box, the more used pair sounds more transparent, more dynamic and even a little more smooth. So they've only improved in sound to me over time. Or am I not understanding your question correctly?

How do the Odin compare to other planars? Was humoring the possibility of picking up a used pair sometime.

I love them. I don't have extensive experience with planars, but I prefer Kennerton over the likes of Fostex/ZMF, Audeze, etc. They're good too of course, but the Odin sounds more natural and balanced to my ears.

I just tried the alternate (microsuede?) pair of pads that come with the Carbon. Didn't like them as much. I don't know their serial numbers (my headphones are not handy at the moment). Now you got me wondering. Hmm. Will look when I can.

Since quite a few of you know me as one of the biggest NightHawk fan for a long time, I thought it would not be polite just to disappear without saying a few words. I will try to keep it as short as possible.

I am a 'one headphone at a time' kind of guy. I could keep a few mid-fi headphones but I can't really see the point of that. I rather keep one higher quality pair what I can still afford and beats everything I owned before. Also, there are so many other nice things in life that also cost money.

For me this 'only one' headphone was the NightHawk for 18 months. (While I was still auditioning other headphones time to time.)
I am not a 'neutralist', I like the NightHawk's slightly colored, mid-bassy, relaxed and fun sound. In an ideal world the NightHawk would stay in my collection of 50 other pair of headphones.

I like the NightHawk sound a lot, but 18 months is a long time. I started to long for something fresh and new, something better and more. After some research two possible paths became visible for me: the Aeon Flow Open and the Audeze LCD2C. At this time I own both of them, but I will keep the LCD2C only.
When I first tried the AFO on, I did not have a 'wow moment'. I saw (or rather heard) its values, but they just didn't click with me. To me they sound very neutral and unexciting. I can hear it is a very delicate and fine tuning, but to me it sounds too lean. I like that it is more opened and more refined compared to the Hawks, but I just couldn't really enjoy it. I kept reaching for the Hawks instead. Even though I lost resolution and overall balance, openness, the Hawks was just so much more fun and more satisfying.

The LCD2C on the other hand seems to be exactly what I have been looking for. It sounds much 'bigger' than the AFO: more weight and body to the sound, much more impact and slam and also way more open sounding. When comparing to the Hawks, well, it is not really a comparison. the 2C is a class above. The 2C gives you the much higher resolution of higher-end cans. Everything sounds more realistic, more detailed. The clarity is on another level compared to AQ headphones. The 2C sounds very open, very dynamic and impactful. It maintains a level of neutralism that describes most higher-end cans, but within this realm still stays fun and an easy listen. The bass is simply sublime. Anyway, I am not here to praise the 2Cs, but I had to give a short insight why I went for these. (Note, I mainly listen to electronica, downtempo, ambient sort of stuff.)

A couple of words on comfort, before I finish this post. The NightHawk is still the most comfortable headphone ever. If I give 10 points on comfort to the Hawks, the AFO would get 6-7, the 2C would get 8-9. This might surprise some knowing how light the AFO is (same weight as the Hawks) and how heavy the 2Cs are (much heavier). Let me explain. The AFO's small earcups started to annoy me after 30-40 minutes each time I had them on. Too narrow, my ears often touched some part of the cups etc. I just couldn't relax despite of the light weight. Audeze improved a lot on comfort with the 2Cs compared to previous models. New headband, gigantic memory foam cups. I was very much worried about their weight at first, but I have to say they are actually very comfy. The cups are extremely open and spacious, plenty of space even for bigger ears. I don't know what neck muscles most audiophiles have, but to me the weight is not an issue even after 3-4 hours. They are on my head but in a very comfortable way.

I am still tempted to buy a new pair of NightHawks just because I love them, but tbh they probably wouldn't get much head time. The 2Cs are just a class above. That is the simple and a bit bitter truth. At current retail price however the AudioQuest headphones are still a bargain! Probably my second favourites and second recommendation under £1000 at the moment. I prefer the Hawks over the AFO and AFC. Perhaps one day when I decide to have more than one headphone at a time I purchase them again (a used pair as things look like now). Till then, I am moving to the next chapter in my audio history. Have you ever had the opportunity to hear Shure SRH1540 headphones on the Sony player in balanced? For me, that is an absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, awesome combination. I have the Sony NW -WM1A.
