I'm not at my computer right now, so I don't have the link on hand, but found an online japanese vendor who was selling the 2kx for 26000 yen (~260 usd). Not sure just how many the site has in stock or if tenso would still work, but it's definitely piqued my interest. I'll post it up here once I find it again.

What you found is Fujiya AVICs offering paying 26.000 Yen for buying a customers 2nd hand AD2000x.

Ohhhhh... darn.

I've been mulling this over in my head but I just realized I can directly ask this. Would it be redundant to own an SA5000 and an AD1000X (or 2000X)? I want something with better mids butI love the analytical sound the SA5000 has so I want a compliment to it. And I'm guessing a comparison to the AD2000 (non X) would be too much to ask.

I had both,  Prefered the SA5K eventually cause for me the AD2K's mids were too unnaturally forward, Tho absolutely devastating with the right female vocals (and percussive drums are sublime as well). They're about on par on technical terms, espcially of course with a stellar transient response. The Sony's FR is just more open sounding and IMO is more neutral. But If the new version has indeed the mids-emphasis higer up then it's certainly might pick my interst in these. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks! I've been leaning towards something on the warmer side, but something about the AD series tempts me so.

When my trusty old Sennheiser HD590 broke a while ago (other driver went silent for no apparent reason), I started looking for new headphones. Recently I visited Japan and had a chance to audition many headphones there at the local Yodobashi store. AD2000X was the model I bought after listening to several models from several manufacturers. I love the way bass sounds through these headphones, it's just perfectly smooth and certainly strong enough for my taste.

AD2K is warmer than SA5K, defintely.

The SA5K and the AD1000X don't really sound that similar, but I might have to do more of a direct A/B to give you some finer points of comparison. Off the cuff I would say the AD1000X is warmer and more bass punch. I enjoy the AD1000X more than the SA5K because tonality sounds more natural to me.

I don't know if they are different enough to be complement each other though. I kind of feel like my AD1000X has replaced my SA5000 for ear time, and for a complement I have the very different MA900...

Aww that's a bit of a shame. I've been very tempted by the MA900 too though. But if you have time for a comparison between the SA5000 and AD1000X, I'd be much appreciative because they'd serve different purposes in my rotation...but the more I think about it, they seem like they'd overlap.

True...but I'm limiting the number of headphones I bring with me to college to three so I don't take up too much space. So far I have the Velodyne vTrue for bass/closed uses and the SA5000 for classical, jazz, and electronic. I want something that works well with folk and anything else with vocals because I think the SA5000 sounds a bit weird with vocals, but I love everything else about it.

So is there any consensus on what the sonic differences are beteween the AD900x, AD1000x and AD2000x?

The hive mind has insufficient data! I feel sort of lonely with my AD1000X haha. Everyone read my review and just decided to buy the AD2000X...

I had the A900X and then went for the 2KX. They were exactly what I was expecting, the same sound sig but more detail, spacing and soundstage. I think the pricing of the two is about right for the upgrade, accepting the law of diminishing returns.

I also used to own the SA5K. The AD2KX is definitely warmer and a little less refined. On paper they would compliment each other, but I know for me, jumping onto the SA5K from warmer phones makes them sound cold, harsh and thin and vice versa. I would stick with one of the other myself but I am in the minority here in terms of people changing phones like the weather!
