The worst aspect of all this is that I suspect if you buy from Japan and import, AT just sees domestic sales. They might conclude that there is little interest in their gear outside Japan and price accordingly. Vicious cycle. I'm going to mention this to the Australian AT rep when I see them

Initial impressions: If we're keeping a running score, it'd be AD2K: 1, AD2KX: 0.
 
Not that the X is bad, but it's not what I'm used to. The AD2K has more of that insistent snappy agility that makes it sound awesome on anything percussive & fast. The X has less of that.

 
Impressions subject to change later. It'll be a while until I report in again, as I want to give the X a proper chance at brain burn-in.

Just received my AD900x from Japan on Tuesday. Tenso is an awesome, awesome service. Ordered on Friday 14th from amazon.co.jp, delivered to my home in Dallas on Tuesday 18th.
 
I'm amazed at how light these are (almost flimsy feeling) compared to my HD 280s. I have a huge head, and they almost feel like they could slip off at any time if not for my earlobes holding them up.
 
Loving the sound. This is my first set of open cans, and I can see how enjoyable these will be for long-term listening compared to the HD 280s I've had for a couple of years now.

Yes, I think that is true for the majority of these Audio Technica "self adjusting headbands". I can't call myself a fan of them. Luckily, the sound makes the hassle worth it.
 
It's the same on the 2000x.
 
Edit: Am also looking forward to 2000 vs 2000x comparison. I bought the 2000x with the assumption it was basically the 2000 with some improvements. I love it, but am curious what the other one sounds like. It is definitely a beast when it comes to midrange.

I picked up a set of 1000x a couple of months ago. The first thing I did was trim the headband rods by about an inch. AT should make a clamping system that allows you to adjust the effective length of the rods - makes all the difference in the world. They fit great now.

I wish I had the hutzpa to do the same to my w3000.

Regarding the quantity of bass in the ad2kx.  Though I don't doubt what you are saying, to my ears I find that the ad2kx produces overall more bass quantity than I remember the ad2k producing, it was an immediate reaction on my end as well.  I'm wondering if it's down to the amp being a different match than the old guard was.

Thanks for the comments. That's actually more or less how I would compare the AD900X with the AD1000X as well.

I'm not at my computer right now, so I don't have the link on hand, but found an online japanese vendor who was selling the 2kx for 26000 yen (~260 usd). Not sure just how many the site has in stock or if tenso would still work, but it's definitely piqued my interest. I'll post it up here once I find it again.

What you found is Fujiya AVICs offering paying 26.000 Yen for buying a customers 2nd hand AD2000x.
