Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Guys am considering these headphones, but getting mix reviews in regards to the sound stage. Some people say its pretty wide and others say it has almost none....so what is it?

How does sound stage compare to AD700/900, AD1000/2000X, AKG K702, K712, DT990, Fidelio X2 etc?

As I want these for primarily music and some gaming.

Struggling to decide between this and the AD1000X (can get it the same price).

I am upgrading from an ATH-AD700 (original non-X version).

Hello!

I've had AD700, AD900, AD2000, W1000X, AD900X and now the R70X. In terms of soundstage the AD700 is the deepest, and it's fairly wide too. AD900 is wider but much less deeper. The AD2000 (and I heard the X is more or less the same from this point of view) is very upfront, everything is "in your face", or an even better description: it sounds like there was no headphone, there's no distance between you and the music. Coming from the AD700/900 it was a bit shocking at first but then I get used to it, and liked it in the end very much. The R70X is very close to the AD2000 in terms of soundstage, so it's very upfront as well. You can use some extra stuffing under the back side of the earpad, it will make the soundstage bigger and the sound a bit more lively. I haven't heard the AD1000X but the AD900X was a bit too bright for me, a mild V signature I guess, the R70X is very different. It's not like any other open Audio-technica, ony the airy presentation is what's common with the above models. So if you like the smoother and airy presentation of the AD700, and want a good amount more bass, it's your can, if you want brighter highs and a more agressive sound, go for the AD1000X.

Hope that helps!

I ended up getting the r70x, thanks anyway. Quiet enjoying it at the moment and just bought a m/m stack to pair with it.

Hi R70x lovers....

I found a answer for weird overly smoothness of Mojo. No its not from Mojo... its from my aged hearing loss of treble! Lol
I just tried " iMac with Sonorworks True-Fi software(which compansate hearing loss) + Chord Mojo + R70x..Bingo! It sound just right for me now.
R70x + Mojo + True-FI(which supports R70x) combo = highly recommended!(especialy if you are aged person YMMV)

dear all i want to ask few things so i can justify my purchase for this headphone (currently this headphone only 178 usd in my country)

currently i only have topping nx4 and fx audio x6 for dac amp
with mdr z700,akg k702,and sennheiser game one also ue900s iem

are this r70x sounds close enough to akg k702 and ue900s?

my listen music are casual music (i simply listen to every song like 80-90s song to new rnb pop song also with heavyly jpop jrock also a little anisong ) so this make me all rounder right ??

so are this ath r70x will give me something diffrent from my current setup or will blown up my mind ??

thank youu

for that price I'd just grab them to find out myself. i paid >400AUD a while back for them
They're high class performers. Will have more subbass than your k702.

imo r70x is quite different from the k702, the r70x has quite subdued treble in comparison, kind of like the ue900. Personally I prefer the sound of the k702 and would not get an r70x on top of that

I have had many headphones come and go (including some high-end ones) but I have always kept the R70X around because it is a very good all-rounder (pretty balanced sounding with nice weight and treble extension).

The sound stage is not as large as the K702, nor does it has the treble brightness of the K702. But everything just sounded right with it - neither dark nor bright, neither lean nor muddy, neither slow nor fast.
