Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

Just picked up a pair of these. I was seriously underwhelmed with them in stock form. I changed the earpads to the brainwaves hm5 pads, then I converted them to balanced. I have them wired directly to the wires inside with a short cable that terminates in a male 2.5mm balanced plug. I run a Fiio btr3k that is attached via velcro to the left side. Now I have a wireless, balanced set that sounds pretty amazing! I've never found much change besides power going to balanced, but converting these really woke them up. I am really happy with them now. They sound fantastic and are super portable for listening on the go when I don't feel like using iem's.

Soundstage, mids, treble quality are all brought up a couple of levels. Bass I'd say is about the same. The headphone attack and decay sounds a tad quicker with these pads, almost has a planar like quality imo. It is worthy upgrade, and I've tried numerous pads with these headphones.

Can you let us know the difference between these and the Angled Brainwavs?

If you're not afraid to spend, these are the best I've heard on the M40x: https://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-Sheepskin-Leather-Memory-Earpad/dp/B01J53KM32

Take this w a grain of salt because it’s from memory and I owned the m40x years ago. The sound was more intimate and in your face with the oval non angled pads, quicker also, with a tad less bass than the angled ones. I seem to recall not liking the sound of the angled pads w the m40x that much. That’s the best I got. Hope it helps!

This can synergizes so well with the FiiO BTR5 in BT-adapter mode. Have it connected in LDAC with Shanling M6 Pro 21. Streaming Tidal. Just a solid set with a nice clear sound signature. Comfort enhanced w/Brainwavz angled oval pads and an HD600 headband pad.
Listening to mine now with the Qudelix K5. They take well to EQ. Crosby,Stills,Nash, and Young's Deja Vu album sounds fantastic with my morning coffee right now. I have more expensive headphones, but this one is well worth the meager price of entry.

What headphone cable are you using?
Well, the cans are set up in Bluetooth adapter mode, meaning I have a FiiO BTR5 velcro'd to the left earcup and have adapted the 2.5mm female jack on the M40X to accommodate a 2.5mm male/3.5mm female adapter plug. I then use a simple male 3.5mm to male 3.5mm to make the connection between the BTR5 and the headphones. It turns the M40X's into Bluetooth headphones.

If you're interested in this mod here's a link to another thread. My post #14 has some detail:

This is a fairly easy mod and then you've got a great BT set!
