You'll never get a closed can with a soundstage as good as the AD700/900.

People will tell you try Ultrasone though and start crapping on about revolutionary technology number 10, wonderful checkbox feature number 54......

AD900 soundstage is more natural and true to me. The AD700 soundstage was artificial. I know this statement is weird since all soundstage on headphones are pretty artificial. But may help you make your decision. I prefer the AD900s, which is why I kept them.

You are right. I tried the Ultrasone. It's 550 or 650. Soundstage is wide for a closed can but cannot be compared to a open can like the AD range.

How's ESW9/10 compared to Ultrasone 550/650 in terms of soundstage?

No idea, but the ESW9 cannot compete with the soundstage or detail of the AD900.

The ESW9 has a very pleasing tone though.

Which one is more vivid and "3D"?

he had them unstreched - which means they were too tight on his head and causing sound to be honky.

LOL. This is audiophile nonsense. Try what you can and like what you have. That's all there it takes to be happy.

This forum is evil. The more I hang around here, the lighter my wallet goes.

I'm not really sure if the ad2ks will improve much with the stretched headband so I'm not getting them again until the day I hear them sounding great

I agree. To prevent my wallet from becoming lighter, I am trying hard to describe the type of sound I like. Wide soundstage with vivid "3D" sound is the most direct way I can describe it. Not trying to quote bullocks audiophile terms. In fact, I feel it sound very noobish the way I describe it.

Good thing is, can't go wrong with either the AD700 or AD900. Both are great headphones.

As for soundstage, you may just hear them for yourself and decide then. Hopefully you can find somewhere to audition them or find a good store with return policy.

I was completely satisfied with my AD700's but not one to leave well enough alone, I bought the AD900's. Woof, everything I love about the 700's is there but the 900's simply offers more of it. Cleaner sound comes to mind, as well as a larger soundstage and I can detect a tad more lower end; not much but it's noticeable.

For those on a budget, the AD700's can't be beat but if you've got the $'s, the 900's would be my pick.

Mine too. The ad700's are good but I feel happier with the sound of the ad900 and listen to them more than my Sennheisers or Grado headphones. The ad900 just sound slightly more balanced to me than the ad700.

I don't know whether anyone else hears this, but with the ad700's I find the treble stands out slightly separately from the rest of the sound whereas the ad900 sounds more 'integrated'. It's more noticeable on speech.

Although I don't own the AD900, but when I tried them I felt exactly the same. I think it is because the upper-mid of the AD700 sound slightly recessed, while in the AD900 it sounds a bit more emphasize and smoother in the mid-treb, that also makes the AD900 sounds slightly brighter than the AD700.
