Alright. I have given them both a listen. Not very good conditions with mostly unfamiliar music. I would guess they had no more than a few hours on them too. So, take that all into consideration. I will post a bit longer description in a new thread to catch others’ attention in case they are about to order blind. If forced to pick one other headphone in the general sound signature area, it would be the W5000s. Detailed, fairly transparent, bright, bass-light. I would still pick the W5000s which were right next to me and easy to compare with. More soon…

Unfortunately the A2000X & A1000X have the same crappy wire headband construction as the W5000's. I believe this causes fit issues that affect the resulting sound.

Why don't they use the beefier construction of the W1000/AD2000/etc...?

^Agreed. These two are pretty close to the W5000 in terms of fit, but definitely better for me. They are very light too. In the end, I still did not like the fit.

I wouldn't mark it necessarily as *better*, I own and like both but W5000 in many ways is way more advanced than AD2000. Still for metal AD2000 is my can of choice.

The ear resting against the driver problem of the AD2000 makes them not perfect either. I would suggest that they just scrap all of their current constructions and get back to the drawing board.

The angle is different compared to the W5000, it's actually the same as the AD2000 uses, which has the same mechanism. The AD2000 fits me perfectly besides the eartouchingthedriver issue. I'm 99% certain that wont be an issue with these as it was with the W5000.

Anyone buy these yet?
I'm curious if anyone has any impressions on the new earpads used on these headphones.
They seem to be slightly deeper than the usual ATH-W and A series earpads.

Personally i believe these to be contemporary-styled mid-ranged, if you will, headphones to the "closed" range that audio-technica offers.
There aren't many option below the w5000 if you disregard the discontinued models. So I don't see these competing with the w5000.
Heck, i've been using mine more and more often over the ad2000's now that they've burnt in fairly well.
To think it could get better with the HA5000 just makes me drool

Though, the comment that "It sounded like an ATH-W5000 without colouring" kind of makes me think twice about it. One, because i quite like the colouring and two, it's too similar to it

I recently acquired the A1000X from a fellow head-fier and I am thoroughly impressed. It sounds better than the A2000X in terms of what it's supposed to do - an analytical headphone with loads of detail and separation. Imaging and sense of air is also very good for a closed design.
 
Surprisingly, I'm getting more detail than the K701 with these, and the separation extends to the lower frequencies. I can actually hear the very faint bassline (yes, it's there) in Arcade Fire's Wake Up fully separate from the drums which tended to get lost on the K701's.
 
I am just a little bit confused, as the A2000X was much more generic and duller sounding ... what gives, Audio-Technica?

Just hooked them up to my HT gear downstairs--so no great shakes for source/amp: Sony BDP-S540/Denon AVR-1905 [headphone out].
 
What I have heard I admittedly like so far, though, which surprised me, given my so-so experience with the A950LTD some years back.  
 
Funny hobby.  What I may not have liked ten years ago becomes something I like today.  
 
To me, the A1000X are the "midrange-centric" headphones that the reconstituted DT880 Premium/2005 [a huge disappointment, given the prior DT880/2003] aspired to be.  Mids are forward, but fleshed out, coherent and detailed.  Definitely some roll-off at both HF and LF extremities, but it seems to be just enough not to bother me, at least at this novelty stage of my encounter with the A1000X.  
 
The A1000X offer up a roomy [despite their closed design], lively and immersive listening experience for me, too.  
 
I agree that the "winged" support system, while appreciably lighter and less bulky feeling, is not as robust as what was used previously, e.g., on the AD700, and might warrant a de-merit.  But, fortunately, I have a big head.  I tip the wings slightly forward and position the earcups a bit high on my ears to get a proper fit.
 
I will say that I MUCH prefer these to the DT990/600 [I know: they're open] I auditioned a week or so ago.
