Audio Technica 50th Anniversary
May 22, 2011 at 12:34 PM Post #17 of 208
Ah yes! I have been anticipating for this. Just love the Audio Technica sound signature. The W-series just appeal to me and I only have the W1000X now. As long I'm still into this hobby this might be very well my last chance to obtain a limited edition headphone if that is true. Not gonna wait another 10 years. I do hope for a new member in the L-series. I want it new!

Aren't they releasing it next year in 2012? Think the 40th Anniversary phone (W2002) were launched in 02.

Quote from earlier in the thread.
Although no new info has been released yet, November is pretty close. :)

If I remember correctly, the W2002 (the 40th anniversary headphone) was released at the end of 2001. I'm guessing that the product announcement will be some time in the summer and then the actual release in November.

Me too!

I somehow want an L3000-like headphone (since I missed the great era of R10/Qualia010/L3k), but my credit card will have a heart attack!

Lol I love it when you can't google translate a Japanese website (flash animation), it's like... get out books? I don't think so.

Hm, that's kinda disappointing IMO.
Looks to be the same housing and headband system as usual.
It doesn't mention they're using any new driver technology or the like, and seems like it's just the same 53mm driver they've always been using.
Edit: on the official page it does mention that the driver is specially designed, the voice coil is OFC 7N, while the older models generally have OFC-8N, and the W1000X has OFC-6N.
Dunno what that signifies though.

Estimated price is 100.000 yen, which is pretty expensive for a rehashed product like this.
The naming is amusing though, because people have been making their own W3000's in the past by transplanting L3000 drivers into other headphones. :)

The amp is very lackluster as well, estimated retail price is 200.000 yen, but it doesn't seem all that different from the original.
It mentions that the difference with the original is a different power cable (lol), and internally it uses some technology that will reduce oscillation/vibration.

Also, the headphones are limited to 2000 units, as for the amp it's 200 units.

Overall I'm quite disappointed by this. Normally I'm an early purchaser of new AT offerings, but for this release I'll wait a bit until more information is released.
Also, no update to the ESW line. :frowning2:

Even the return of the plastic headbands is a bit dissapointing versus the metal on the W5000.
But the laquer finish is as nice as ever.

I'm only wondering if the refernce to W2002 and L3000 in appearence and name respectively are a hint to waht it will sound like...
