Audeze LCD-4

I think the LCD4 headphones are a classic headphones. As much as I would love to own the LCD5’s I will keep my LCD4’s. They are worth more to me than the $2500 I could get for them. I am currently using my new TC’s for the most part but the 4’s compliment the TC’s nicely where the 5’s are probably closer to the TC’s.

I'm an old fashion Dire Straits fan. Listening to 'On Every Street' with the LCD4 driven by my tube amp Odyssey and source from Yggy on Apple Music, the sound grabs you by the jugular.

So it appears there's still a remnant of LCD4 lovers. :relaxed:
There will always be, since the 5 is not a better 4 but a completely different flavor

That's a bit of a hot take. Have you directly compared the two? I owned the 4 for a bit of time, and I would say the LCD-5 is vastly superior in transparency, speed, detail, and tonality.

The 4’s have proven the test of time. The 5’s are probably better being in the same class as the Susvara and the Abyss Phi TC’s but the 4’s will probably hold their own being seductively warm yet detailed. It is like how the 3’s are still a popular headphones. Personally I don’t like the X’s but many do.

I haven’t compared them myself but this is pretty much what is gathered from the reviews.

The 4 and 5 are two different flavours.
One has the thick creamy sound the other a more neutral detailed one.

For that reason I expect the LCD-4 to be still desired in the future.

Having heard both too... for those reasons the bass presentation is different. The LCD4 is thicker and I actually prefer the LCD4. I also prefer the 4z to the LCD5 which retains practically the same bass as the LCD4 but with more speed.

Did you volume match to the SPL of the bass frequency (~300hz is a good spot since both are linear at that point)? This plays a big roll in perception.

This afternoon I plan on doing just that with the LCD-MX4, which in my opinion has practically the same bass as the LCD-4. I like to be as detailed and fair in my comparison as possible, so if you have any suggestions on methods of comparison I'm all ears. A LOT of people are waiting for a "bass" shoot-out and comparison between the LCD-5 and LCD-4(family).

Bet I'm the only one still enjoying LCD4. :)

Nah...I have listened to mine for the last two weeks without even listening to my dynamic headphones, until today. :)

Fantastic headphones.

The Lcd-5 is not an evolution of the Lcd-4. Its a different approach in sound signature, weight and materials. I didn’t buy my lcd4s because of their speed or hyper detail. I bought them for their lush romantic, rich and creamy sound while providing superb resolution. With the LCD-4, I do not get listening fatigue and can listen for hours on end with a wide smile on my face ( their weight doesn’t bother my neck at all). Their heft, along with their beautiful Cocobola wood ( my pair) wreak of quality and you feel you got your moneys worth. After several years of ownership, I’m still extremely happy with them and have zero intention of ever selling them. They are my go-to headphones and are better than every other high end pair that I’ve owned and still own. They play well across all genres and are now even bettter with the 2021 pads. Will I complement them with the LCD-5? Possibly yes, but time will tell as more professional and owner reviews come in.

It really doesn’t matter if you volume match SPL. The LCD5 has elevated mids and highs compared to the LCD4 so the bass will always be perceived differently. Hence the LCD5 provides a different flavour and shouldn’t be viewed as a direct upgrade to the LCD5. Purely based on the bass the LCD4 does it better and provides a better experience because it’s much more apparent and audible vs the LCD5.

Everyday I’ve been loving my lcd-4s like a lover on an extended holiday knowing we can’t be together. Like the film “Before Sunrise”. I don’t know what the future holds but I will love you today, LCD-4.
