Astell & Kern SR15: A&norma Impressions & Reviews

This has been a positive thread to read for someone interested in the Norma. Folks have been open about their positive impressions and negative experiences and context was provided regarding the weight of importance to various aspects (streaming tidal a non-negotiable vs not something cared about).

My 1st DAP post iPod Classic 160GB was the FiiO X5ii and then the X5iii. Big learning experience.....going from a fairly ugly, chunky pure player to a slick, good looking Android based device. I gained an understanding of many things that annoy me about these devices.

Start up time, ease of navigation, smoothness / buginess of UI, firmware updates actually working, etc. Those are things that have been challenging and have caused me to look for a replacement for my X5iii. It is a daunting task when considering 5-10 DAPs - I was going to create a spreadsheet - features down the left and models along the top. Fortunately I was reminded of A&K and these 3 new models that recently came out.

I thought 2 slots like the X5iii was a non-negotiable, but if 512 cards start appearing available, and they work in the players - then I’m golden. The idea of stripped down Android that works well, a mature company to work on the Firmware, and the hope/promise of good sound - the Norma sounds perfect for my needs.

I stopped by a store and was able to compare the X5iii to the KANN, and I was very impressed - they didn’t have the Norma. My main uses will be portable while traveling (airport, plane, hotel) and in the car - likely USB out to my processor.

I’m hoping to get over to Moon Audio in Raleigh soon for a listen. I want to thank those on the thread who have provided great information.

I went through the same journey, iPod Classic > FiiO X5 and now I have the Norma SR15. I love it! Once they support MQA it will be even better!
I used it on airports, planes, hotels, working out, but not on the car. I stream Tidal through my phone while on the car to listen to stuff I don't have on my DAP.

New firmware for the SR15 adding support for the Open App service will be released TOMORROW, November 15th morning time in Korea. Here in the US, users will probably see it late tonight.

If you are not familiar with the new Open App service, the service gives you the option to sideload the Android version of popular streaming apps on the player including Spotify, Amazon Music, Qobuz, Pandora, etc. and offers offline content mode on those apps. The full Tidal Android app can also be loaded to provide Tidal offlne. More information can be found here along with a list of initially supported apps - https://www.astellnkern.com/eng/content/support/faq/view.asp?li=1000606

I'm also on the same road as you, i currently only have a FiiO X5III and im tired of its buggyness, slow UI and boring experience.
I'm going to be buying an AK A&Norma SR15 in near future because from what ive read, seen i think it would be the player for me to use for the next few years. ive had the fiio since it came out and i feel its time to move on. i'll probobly give the DAP to a family member for free or attempt to sell it online on a used audio equipment site in my city.

can't wait for my SR15!

Are you able to store offline playlists to the external sd card?
@chevynoir Yes, you can store Spotify offline content to microSD card. In the Spotify app, under settings, second to last option - Storage. Here you can choose to save offline content to internal memory or SD card.

Where can I download manually the 1.10 firmware ? (or the previous version if I want to back to older version ?).
Firmware can only be downloaded and installed via Wi-Fi over the air. Once a new firmware is installed, it cannot be rolled back to a previous version by the user.
