Astell & Kern SR15: A&norma Impressions & Reviews

Hi Jason,

thanks for confirming, those are really good news.

Yesterday I figured out, someone with a Dragonfly could also easily verify this by connecting a Dragonfly to a DAP and checking the color of the led during the playback. That should stay green for redbook content. Standard Android would upsample to the highest possible data rate, in case of Dragonfly to 96kHz, so it would turn purple with streaming services on standard Android...

@chevynoir Yes, you can store Spotify offline content to microSD card. In the Spotify app, under settings, second to last option - Storage. Here you can choose to save offline content to internal memory or SD card.

Does that work for Tidal as well? Can someone test or confirm? My Onkyo DP-X1 is dying slowly, so I'm looking for an alternative.

Anyone try a 512 card in the Norma yet?

can't remember if i've asked this or not but has anyone compared the SR15 to the FiiO X5 Gen III ?
i'm still on the fence if i should make the switch. i want to know if the power output for headphones via 3.5 and 2.5 is more or at the very least exactly the same. if its weaker that might hinder my choice of switching. thanks in advance :)

Just got my SR15. There really is no option for normal.gain and high gain right? Been playing with the setti gs and I can't seem to find any. Hope you guys can confirm this.
There are no options to switch between normal or high gain on the SR15.

I just picked up my SR15 yesterday upon the announcement of the 'free case'.....I just deleted an email without opening it from a shop announcing discounts on the SR15......so I'm hoping that I didn't jump too soon.

Anyway.....I love the player! I was surprised by it's diminutive size, but I prefer it vs the X5iii and especially the KANN that I auditioned. I really like the UI - SO much better than the FiiO IMO.....it is quick, responsive, and the functions are exactly how I was hoping they would be. I really liked the way it scanned the entire card when I stuck the card in....didn't take a lot of time....and bam - there is 155GB's worth of music loaded in.....and I love that it is easy to see things in the 'Folder' view - because that is how I have my music stored / organized.

I was immediately impressed by the sound....going off about a week's absence of the FiiO X5iii......but to my ears, this player is a great improvement. I'm currently listening with 64Audio A6t's in the 3.5mm socket - to my ears, it provides all of the staging I would desire - I feel the width is outstanding. For tonality - it is fantastic in my view - some of the reviews mentioned the mids being slightly recessed - likely so, but it certainly doesn't take away at all in my view. Lastly, I personally felt they drove my Utopias just fine - other than the worry of the cable dragging the player off of my desk (reason to switch to the CIEMs), I could very happily play through the entire card.

Only negative so far.....I really wish they had installed the screen protectors at the factory. This was 45 minutes worth of frustration this morning - put them on, bubbles and such - when I pulled the tab off, it left a large amount of sticky residue on the outside of the shield.....alcohol and elbow grease would not remove it.....I ended up pulling the front one back off (after using both of the ones they provided), and then ordered a $20 glass protector from Amazon.......I'm not one to be overly critical and demand a lot for nothing.....but again, as others have said, for $700 - decent screen protector applied and a case would be nearly expected. I can understand - from a business decision...instead of putting in a cheapy case that many replace anyway with a better one.....or in a different color.....so I can see it as a tough decision.

Anyway.....other than the screen protector thing.....I'm completely satisfied with this player - especially after spending a couple years with the FiiO X5iii. Now - if I could just get confirmation on the 512GB card question - and I have to verify the USB output (my Auralic Aries/Vega are being jerks right now) - I'll eventually have the perfect player for me :)

Don't know of anyone who has tried a 512GB on the SR15, there are a number of people that are using them in the SE100 and SP1000 without issue. Our players support up to 2TB cards, so there should be no issue with the 512GB cards. We recommend formatting cards as FAT32 for best results.

I'm exactly in the same position, based on what you've mentioned here. do you have headphones other than the utopias and A6ts? i dont wanna be mean but the Utopias are super easy to drive and very efficient. i've seen people run them on mobile phones and smaller portable amps perfectly. I never use IEMs so i can't comment on A6ts.

i'd be using it mostly with my DT1990 Pro, H6 Gen 2, P7 and in the near future audeze LCD2C(classic).

would there be power issues? :S

also since its new for you, notice any heating ? i hear it has some heating throttle for the first few days.

Thank you very much for this reply - that is exactly what I was hoping for - if I get a card before someone else does, I'll let you all know the result.

Formatting cards - do you recommend doing that in the device? I use Mac exclusively for managing my music, so my hope is that I'll be able to write to the card with no difficulty connected via USB.

That is not mean at all :) Completely legitimate question - the Utopia is extremely easy to drive......so, I just hooked up my Senn HD650's, and I'm happy to report that - IMO - they drive these headphones perfectly fine. Now - I'm at 132/150 with a high res file - Sasha's 'Refracted Live', and the Norma is giving the HD650's a workout - especially with the low bass. Again....I'd be completely satisfied with this sound - others may contradict this vehemently - just relaying my experience.

The player is warm.....not any more than the FiiO at times. It certainly doesn't bother me or freak me out.
