Astell&Kern SA700 - Past meets Present

why would you want to include the mojo when there is an AK4492 in there..??

SA700 (and other A&K new portable series) doesn't have much power (amps) in low impedance.

Low efficiency low impedance headphones like Ether 2 doesn't sound well on SA700 alone even on 2.5mm, and powerful Mojo (of course on 3.5mm) plays it much better.
High impedance standard efficiency headphones like HD650 is not bad on 2.5mm SA700.

I heard the SA700 and AK240ss today.

I can confirm that the AK240ss has a wider soundstage than the SA700.

With SA700, the music played a lot more narrow than ak240ss.

Warmth and clarity wise, both sounded similar.
And what gear do you use to come to this conclusion ?

Ok, so with the Layla 2, the soundstage is better on AK240SS...

Thanks guys for your nice comments.

However, bear in mind that I used Layla 2 for both the SA700 and AK240ss, so the IEM was the same and the DAP was the factor of change.

I also compared Andromeda and Solaris Special Edition. I found the Andromeda to be very close to the Layla 2 in terms of soundstage, almost identical. However, the Layla 2 had a better 3D sound to it.

Andromeda definitely sounded more balanced than the solaris and wider.

How long have you burned in SA700, and which jack 2.5/3.5 are you using?
To me, 2.5mm took very long time to open up. It took nearly 300 hours to feel OK to me. (Sound at 250 hours burn-in in 2.5mm was not acceptable to me. First couple hours was not bad as usual, but it gets bad soon.)
The change in 3.5mm was much less than that of 2.5mm.
I know, it might be just me, but this was what I thought of.

I tried the SA700 in a shop. I am guessing the player may have less than 200 hours of play time. It seemed quite new.

I used the 1st gen stock layla 1 cable in the 2.5mm balanced port.

The 240ss should be over 200 hours, given Iit has been released for nearly 4 years now.

I see. Thank you.
If you have a chance to try well burned in SA700 (over 300 hours on 2.5mm), please try again.

Ak240ss + Layla 2

Listened to Spanish harlem.

The bassy notes from first 5 seconds of the song spread further apart on the 240ss.
Thank you for your (real) feedback :)
With more details, it is easier to understand.

AK240SS is a great player, but I never listened to Layla 2, so I can only approve your choice :)

if I understood well, the 2 units were demo ?
I don’t know if burn in will change anything, but yes, it could be interesting to try them again in few weeks/months.

what source do you used to listen with your Layla 2 ?

Could you give us more comparaisons between AK240SS and SA700, as both of them are made with SS ?
