What is the reason why would we use a 3.5mm+2.5mm to 4.4mm adapter instead of just 2.5mm to 4.4mm?

Dual plug is more stable, connector less likely to snap off.
Oh is that it mostly? So it'll be better to just go 4.4mm to 3.5mm+2.5mm than 2.5mm straight as well?

Depends on how you use the device, I guess. I just use a straight 2.5mm balanced plug, but I'm not moving around when I'm using the SP2000 or have it in a backpack while I'm on the move or whatever where there's a possibility of the 2.5mm plug snapping. I'm sitting in a chair with the device next to me so the risk of the plug snapping off & getting stuck in the device is minimal for me. Obviously if you're using it whilst active, your mileage may vary.

The dual plug also uses the ground from the 3.5 mm for the pentaconn ground. The 2.5 mm alone does not have a separate ground. It works either way.

The 2.5mm jack serves as signal and the 3.5mm as ground. It "can/might" be better if your cable has a shield ground it to the 4.4mm connector's fifth pin (ground pin). But I think most cable manufacturers don't do that. And Sony does not connect the ground pin for their 4.4mm DAP. I guess most people just use it as a dual plug adaptor.

@JasonNYC any chance the SP2000 will get LDAC support in the future?

Fingers crossed for the SP3K to come out with LDAC support in the summer with a bunch of other bells and whistles :p

My SP2000 bricked on me today. Same problem as this user:

I've contacted both seller and ak's european info. Purchase is under two years (may 2020) so should fall into warranty. Still pretty uncoool for a unit like this to just fail to boot suddenly. Something battery related it seems.

Still the best dap out there soundwise though, for my tastes. Not looking forward to listening to my replacement daps while this gets sorted out.
