Not discontinued, more cannot be produced at the moment because there are no AK4499 chips available due to the AKM factory fire.
Oh, makes sense. Is there an audible difference between the copper and steel version?

I owned both Cu and SS, and to me, there was. However, I ended up in parting with both (at a loss, of course) to settle with Vegas Gold Limited Edition that has the details of SS with the touch of warmth from Cu. It is currently on sale if anyone is interested.

I'd say there are two answers to your question:

If you enjoy stuff like aftermarket cables, which uses Au/Pd/Pt/whatever sounds cooler instead of copper or, in the extreme case, silver - definitely!
If you heard and agree with the concept of psychoacoustics - don't even bother, just buy whatever version you can find/is cheaper/you like how it looks

The fire was over a year ago. At the time there was talk of a six month delay but also alternative places to manufacture.
It seems odd that one fire could seemingly cause such disruption.
Have we just become so dependent on single suppliers?
Did no customer ever inquire as to contingency plans in the event of disruption?

AKM is pretty unique among semiconductor companies. They do everything in-house (from design tools to fab) which is also their strength. I believe other major DAC players are fabless so they have some flexibility.

I got the copper version two days ago.. I may have waited too late to get one because it appears a new version may be around the corner.

I seem to remember in one of the SP2KT threads it was mentioned that another flagship was likely years away due to the situation with components but you'd never know I guess.

I just knew i wouldn't really hear a difference between the SP1000 vs SP200 BUT I honestly "hear" a fuller, clearer, wider soundstage, the mids are soooo sweeet... treble still has that sparkle.. bass is fuller... using 64audio A18t. The mids is where my heart is, and this baby delivers.

Why is the user experience better on my SP2000T when compared to my SP 2000? Why do we need to side load apps on one and no the other, why is the user interface more usable on the 2000T - I can easily go back to running services when changing setting. They both should have near identical user experience, just weird.

I had an opportunity to listen on a stainless steel and copper version, they sound the same.. folks saying the sound signature is different is just not true, at least to my ears
