Short answer thicker fuller sound, more bass impact, SP1000 is more detailed and resolving especially in the upper registers.

How do ak380 sound in comparison to sp1000?

I have had the 380SS with AMP for a couple of weeks now and I am listening to it paired up with a pair of Massdrop Zeus universal IEMs and a Norne Audio Silvergarde SX cable. Absolutely blown away by this combination. Can't imagine anything sounding much better.

Hi there, please help!
I've got AK380 with firmware 1.18
and System update in menu unavailable.

App update give me TIDAL 1.1 - it doesn't work

What can I do?
ok, i found link for archive with all firmwares - if smb need that: https://drive.google.com/a/doctorhead.ru/uc?id=1NWv25MORsPam8HWxFnf_G8XKaViea8IM&export=download

i installed updated, tidal start working BUT, after battery dead it's not loading.
It was fully recharged by night and still - just "A" logo spining for hour...
(tried reset - on\off for 12 seconds - same story, it's off and not loading after that)...

My AK380 is stuck on the start-up screen with the spinning 'A'.
Have tried resetting it a few times by holding the power button for 12secs, but to no avail.
Is there a solution?

The NW-WM1z has a copper chassis so this adds a little more validity to chassis materials. However, Sony goes further and upgrades wires and caps whereas AK uses the same PCB for all their chassis.

Sound quality aside, I decided to stay with AK instead of Sony because of the following:

  1. Sony UI is not as refined and mature as AK. I know they will get there, but I don't have the patience to wait.
  2. New 4.4mm balanced port - while this is a superior connector, all of my cables are terminated for 2.5mm AK.
  3. Sony does not have wifi, so no streaming, no DLNA capability.
  4. Sony does not have a DAC mode
  5. Sony uses a proprietary cable for charging and data xfer. I have too many cables as it is.

I'm sure the sound quality is top notch and the Sony is certainly a better priced TOTL DAP.

Well, in just over 2 years I find myself with the WM1z. To address my original thoughts:

1) Sony UI is fast and designed really well. Finally a DAP with sort by album artist! Surely the proprietary OS helps with the amazing 30 hr battery life.
2) Yes, it was expensive to buy new cables and re-termination to 4.4mm, but now it's available on numerous amps.
3) This was a complete surprise - BT receive mode in LDAC which takes care of any streaming I need.
4) DAC mode now fully available - both battery charging or no charging option to boot.
5) Still a pain, but pleasantly surprised at the availability of third party adapters and OTG cables.

I will take full credit for Sony responding to my original post LOL!

I can confirm that the AK380 is able to read the 1TB sandisk extreme pro micro sd card.

Takes around 50 seconds to read the card (containing 28gb of music).

The key is to buy a sd card with a fast read speed. - go for extreme pro, not extreme plus.

The Tidal app on ak380 still working fine, but unable to play MQA files and master quality of the music. Due to the Astell and Kern are not going to releases any firmware update for ak380 that you are unable to get the newest version of Tidal app in the future.
Yes, the AK380 can read a micro sd up to 1TB. But before you use the sd card, just format it by using the ak380.

Oh, it such a pity about tidal (even my onkyo dp-x1a reads mqa/master quality tracks (
I meant in usability and comfortable the onkyo player is great
How about sound? will i receive a huge difference in sound or maybe difference will be not too much?
I use my dpx1a with tidal as transport to my dac , which sends it to analog monitors , or as Bluetooth transport to my dac, i have w80 and w60 with balance and Bluetooth aptx hd cables
