Astell&Kern AK380

The AK380 will not be getting the Open APK update as it runs an older version of Android than the newer players. We will continue to support and are planning on adding some new features in future firmware updates for other players in the line that will not get the OpenAPK support, including the AK300 series players. We will make some official announcements soon.
@JasonNYC sorry about digging out old post. But I guess this is not going to happen. waited 2yrs+ for this.

For those who still had hope about the possibility of having Tidal in our AK380, this is the official response from A&K:

Astell&Kern has identified the issues users are having with the embedded Tidal app. Tidal has changed the authentication method used when logging into third-party Tidal apps. Astell&Kern is working as quickly as possible to make the required changes in the embedded app.
New firmware updates for the SP2000, SP1000, SP1000M, SE200, SE100, SR25 and KANN ALPHA will be released in May 2021, which will contain an updated embedded Tidal app to fix the authentication issues.
There is an issue with the new Tidal authentication policies on the following players – KANN CUBE, SA700, SR15, CT15 and CT10. We are looking into ways to continue to support the Tidal app on these players. More information will be available in May 2021.
Tidal is dropping support for older model Android devices. Unfortunately this means Tidal can no longer be supported on the following players due to the new authentication requirements - AK380, AK320, AK300, KANN, AK70 MKII, AK70, AK240, AK120II, AK100II.

Time for community developed firmware?
AK's product life cycle is too short to gather any such interest IMO. You don't see people mod AK products any more either, whereas WM1Z mod is still a thing.

Here´s a quote from Yu Kuk - il, AK´s Sound Designer

"...I don't eat anything at all but only drink for several days while tuning the sound. When getting hungry, you get extremely sensitive, right? Hearing can also be that much acute. I lose more than 9 pounds in weight because of that..."

Now, that´s what I call commitment to Sound Quality

That doesn’t help me much to use TIDAL in my AK380.

Hi,

I’m pretty much new here at Head-fi, though I’ve been following the site for some time now. I was hoping some of you guys could help me with one thing. I live in the UK and own an AK380 copper+amp combo in need for repair. I have already tried to reach iRiver, but no luck.

Does anybody here know where I could send it for repair? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have the same combination as you and I sent my AK380 Copper back to their service centre in Germany to get repaired as every time I pressed the power button my AK would cut out and power off, cost to repair that was €20 and I decided to have a new battery 🔋 and was charged €40.

The details are below, send them a e mail and they will send you a form to fill in, you have to fill it out on your PC or Laptop and then print it out and send it back with your device.

I hope that helps.

Tony

The authorized repair center for the UK/EU is in Germany. You can find more info here, as well as fill out an online RMA form for service - https://www.iriver.com/support/RMA_001.asp

You can also reach out to the Astell&Kern UK here - https://www.astellkern.co.uk/contactak

On the subject of repairs, my AK380 Amp battery needs replaced but DM Solution can't get hold of one as production has ended. Is there another battery that would fit?

Thank you very much for the advice. I contacted them directly and everything is on the mend now. Apparently there were a couple of bits that needed to be changed, but I am quite pleased with the service I've got until now. Now to wait a bit longer...
