I was with my colleagues in a local electronics store, and they not being audiophiles, went straight to the Bose section and were amazed by the "great sound".

What is the general opinion of you guys on this brand?

In my opinion, they seem really overpriced, cheap plastic on ALL of their products, and aren't worth considering next to the likes of the other brands?

No, they are not well respected. They are consumer crap trying to masquearde as audiophile grade tot he masses. I think people get so pissed off at them beacuse of this.

Respected? Not really. Not that their stuff don't sound good, just over-marketed and over-priced. They simply don't worth their asking price.

My opinion right here. It's not that the Bose headphones sound bad, it's just that they don't sound good for the price that is asked. I'd have no problem buying a pair of Triports if the price was down around $40 or so.

No, Bose doesn't sound good, either. Have you actually heard it? There's nothing natural about the sound of any product they make.

It's just heavy marketing. Nothing more.

Bose can be an object of disdain on these forums, but I agree with the previous poster that they are over-priced and over-hyped (as high audiophile grade) to an otherwise unsuspecting, non-discriminating and/or uninformed public.

Myself, I admit to having wanted to own the Bose 601 speaker system years back! They sounded good and looked "cool" to me at the time, too. : ) However, after falling into more serious audiophile circles and realizing that superior sound was generally more affordable elsewhere, I eventually joined the "Bose Quiet Disdainers" club (with nose held high, especially around the Acousta-Mass exhibit).

Bose are probably respected and well received by about 95 percent of the general public and totally bashed by the less than 5 percent of the audiophile community.

It basically depends on what you're looking to gain from the product. On some things, they deliver very well and on others, not so well.

I owned a pair of Bose Triports 4 years ago. The sound was easily beaten by a pair of Koss Portapro's I had that were 1/3 the price. The headband broke after only 2 weeks of use. As for being respected, only by the people who buy into their phony advertising. Bose markets themselves as being top-of-the-line high end and the average consumer believes it. I sure did, before my own experience. 2 years after they broke, I still had them and decided to try them with a portable amplifier to see if the sound might improve. The Triports have been the only headphone I've seen to actually sound worse with amplification.

Someone gave me a pair of Bose IEs (she could not keep them in her ears) and I would agree that they are worth about $40-$50. I don't think they sounded horrible, just way overpriced. In fact, I sold them on ebay for $55 and bought some PK3s ($25 group buy) and foamies for the Atrios I owned at the time (both since sold as well).

Also once owned the old Bose bookshelf speakers, and a friend blew them up at a party via volume. Of course, the "tape" that passed as wood veneer had all but peeled off at that point (got them in 1978 or so).

Their worst ripo-off is the Wave radio, which costs $500. I once bought one for kicks and did an A/B with a Cambridge Soundworks Model 88CD table radio ($350 at the time), and it was no contest. Sent the Wave radio packing in 30 minutes. In fact, I still have/use the Model88, a classic.

More or less they have great bass and comfort but their disgustingly over prices for there sound quality you get. For the price you pay you could easily get a better sounding alternative
