Have some humility and restraint folks.
Especially when asking for recommendations.

"I want deep tight bass, natural sound with warm midrange, clear sparkling extended highs, lots of detail, great soundstage for < insert price > !"

Me too mate, me too!

A smarter way to post would be to ask for suggestions for specific music styles. naming groups or performers would be even more helpful. IE: "I want headphones to listen to my jazz and classical music. I really love chet baker and recordings by Solti. what are some of the best cans for this type of music?"

now, this is still a post that has been answered before, but it is still more likely to get a real suggestion in my mind.
also, by naming specific groups or performers, we can tailor the suggestions for how those recordings were produced. if the poster listens to lots of todays overproduced loud music, it wont play the same as original stones recordings. Just a thought.

what would be better, then?

I was looking into the idea of not posting 'i want everything and i want it cheap'. The paraphrase I used is so amazingly loaded it gives absolutely no information.

Most people really come here not knowing what they want, and ask for everything as a result. Better idea is figuring things out - if you can't formulate any idea at all, pick something out of the popular headphones in price range and just buy it. On FS forum if you want to have easier time recuperating money.

After that decide what you like, what you don't like, and build upon it. Don't say 'I want everything' - say 'my main objective is improve in these specific areas, as these are the most important.'

What could be useful would be a sticky with general recommendations for either specific sound aspects (ie, punchy bass, sparkling highs, articularity) or specific genres (e.g metal, jazz). Then you could have everyone vote for their preferred in each category, and that would get talied with a list of headphones plus a number next to it to signify how many votes it has. Would be a lot of updating though, but I'm sure it would save everyone a lot of time with the usual "gaming and closed headphones recommendations" ...

i'm looking for a headphone that doesn't make my head itchy. can you please recommend a headphone that is made with hypoallergenic materials? btw i also want deep tight bass, natural sound with warm midrange, clear sparkling extended highs, lots of detail, great soundstage for free or next to nothing. thanks!

most of the time these recommendations can be a bore for more experienced head-fi'ers are they already know what's on the market. i have only been here since feb. but i am beginning to recommend the same headphones over and over again. maybe a top 10 list or best in class listing would help? or would that just cause flame wars?

This is what I've been thinking lately. I've been considering recommending just taking a chance on a pair of headphones, as until you own a pair, you wont really have a point of reference for all the comments and opinions on them and other headphones.

I'd prefer it if people use the search function. I don't see any recommendations for any reasons that have already been expressed innumerable times.

I assume those who are new into headphones don't really know what they want until they have heard a few of them. And then they should be able to be more specific.

That reminds me of selecting the "right" sales people to assist customers. Ask them stupid questions and see how they respond. Genuine ones would be able to interpret customer requests, extract more information and filter down options for customers. I would avoid sales people who expect customers to know everything about their products.

Well, if they paid me for the headphone recommendation, I would more than gladly go through the whole question series and do my best to figure out what's best for them. Heck, I'll even try to put myself in their shoes and listen to some of their music =).

All I'm tired of is the "recommend me a headphone for gaming" type threads.

If only they would take the time to perform an advanced search for the word gaming in the title only, I imagine they would be hit with over 1,000+ threads to choose from.

I just took the plunge and bought some grado sr-80's i think buying a pair of headphones is the best way to go. As other peoples words cant describe sound that well in general, but it is a little better to have some point of comparison.

I decided to get the Alo-780's because they were basically a suped version of my portapros
