I realise the k701 would sound a lot better amped despite it's impendence being just 62 ohm so was wondering if anyone could advise on which sub-$150 amp to get amp the k701. I have a Fiio E7 now and am wondering if it would work well as an Amp/DAC for the K701. Cheers.

The 70x is very hard to drive properly. The amp that pushes it to performance levels should output about 500 mw of peak power and plenty of sustainable current. This is IMO. The AKG site says 200 mw but I'm assuming they mean continuous. They can be played with less power but you will not achieve the results that can be had.

Reference cans on less than reference gear diminishes their capabilities. Only you can decide if the differences are worth the investment. If you haven't heard what they can do on reference gear, you haven't set the high bar they can achieve.

Thanks for the advice. So in this case, I basically need to spend quite a lot more to actually push the k701 to its full potential. Am really thinking of getting the k701 but having second thoughts now. However, am still curious what amps (probably cheaper but not sub-$150) would be sufficient as a reference gear (probably sourced from my pc and a rega planet - older one).

My advice is don't let all those hype catch up to you. You will end up buying more and more gear like me T_T
