Haven't heard the XD-53 but the other 2 (580 and DJ1) will need amping to get the bass impact that you crave.

If you want killer bass straight out of a portable, the Sony XB-500 is a good way to go.

I'd go with the XD53's.  Well, maybe.

Ur mp3 probably won't be able to drive them (first hand experience), and the laptop should be able to, with the volume almost maxed out.  They're great headphones, though, I haven't tried the other 2. I'd say max use is 3.5 hrs - 4hrs. at a time, as the closed design can make ur ears really hot and sweaty by then. 30 minute break is good enough to air them out.

Also... forgot to mention, the design for the actual speaker cup isn't very deep, so it can also push/pull ur ears back, if ur ears stick out more than the norm, u may feel uncomfortable faster.

Anyone interested in getting a Allen n Heath XD53.. Try n track down a Denon DN-HP1000.. These would be the same but cheaper. I think both AnH phones are just rebranded Denon phones. The XD40 looks like the HP500 Denons to me.

Oh I would say neither. You need try out a Panasonic RP-HTF600-S.. $30. You get whatever of the 2 phones you want. And then you get these Panasonics.. You just might return the other.

Ive personally used the XD-53's for a few sets ive played in past gigs over the years, they sound like a majority of other DJ cans ive used, bass heavy, decent mids, rolled off highs.

If you want clarity the Ultrasone HFI-580/DJ1 would be a better choice.

I don't believe the DJ1s/580s benefit from or need amping.

With the right amp you can make it sound glorious...
So yes they benefit a lot i would say...

The Denon HP1000 and Audio Technica Pro700 are the same. I don't think the XD53 is the same, though it is made by Audio Technica as well.

Just because driver specs are the same does not mean the headphones are the same.

They could very well sound the same, or not.

But looking over the pictures, the AnH's in front of me look better built and more sturdy. No 180 degree swivel (100 degrees), and 10 screw attachments from the headband to driver.

Less movement, better build quality?
