@uelover ... appreciate that you have tried emails ... but have you actually tried phoning and speaking to them ?

I have refrained from making international calls till now. Maybe I should do it come next Monday. Thanks for the suggestion!

They might be literally running short of cash, given the fact that it is a small firm.

But wait, you said you prefer mimby over Onyx. That effectively eliminates my interests on their products, perhaps except pavane. Could you elaborate some details?

Peeps, you really need to understand the difference between NOS and OS DACs before drawing any conclusions, especially if you listen to CD-quality or compressed material. You can run an oversampling digital filter (e.g. HQ Player) in front of a Metrum DAC and it will then sound closer to say Mimby.

Personally, I find the Mimby to sound more "complete", more balanced and extended, with more impact than the Onyx.

The Onyx is good for very very high quality recording and simple music (e.g. one vocal, one guitar, one piano), which makes it a specialist DAC for such purpose.

However, the Mimby is no slough in those categories either, and yet it does "better" in the other genres. The price difference makes the Mimby a no-brainer for me.

I am thinking of moving up the Schiit chain. Maybe when the unison USB is released.

I guess it's all about synergy.
When I compare my cheap 1543 NOS DAC to my Mimby I also hear more balance and extension on the Mimby side.
That being said, the Mimby playing through my Kef LS50 makes me fatigue pretty quickly whereas I can listen to the 1543 DAC for hours on end. On the other hand I don't find the Mimby fatiguing when I listen to it via my HD6xx.

I recently bought Metrum Jade directly from Metrum and had slightly similar experience than uelover. I ended returning it also during the 30-day trial period. I loved the sound but in the end it didn't match well with my new active speakers and I needed something with room correction. Everything went smooth as butter until I wanted to return the item.

In my case, I returned the Jade by shipping it through our local post office. It arrived to Netherlands in 4-5 days and they actually did pick up my return shipment from post office since I didn't pay for delivery to the door. Communication was good, especially with Maria, but after they got the return shipment it took way too long to get the money back on my account. I think I waited 3-4 weeks before they refunded my credit card. I had made the payment with PayPal and at one point got worried since I also had short communication blackout with Maria, who had previously answered to me in the same day always. Eventually she answered me and said she had a short vacation. Though I wonder how no one else replied during the vacation. At this point I got slightly worried and launched dispute but after that I quickly got answer from PayPal that Metrum had refunded me and there's no need for dispute. So eventually got my money back and everything's ok now.

I bet she is the only one responsible for processing stuff like that at the company & if she is away from the office & it gets backlogged, it will take a long time to get through all the emails.

From your experience, do you onyx seems to color sounds? Or do not resolve enough or imaging is not on par with mimby?

By the way, yes. If you doubt that it does not perform well enough compared to mimby, returning is a right thing to do.

I find the Onyx to sound "restrained", more mid focused with lesser top and bottom extension and impact. I am not sure if it's a matter of it not being resolving enough or that is the sound characteristics of the Onyx.

I listen to live music most of the time, and the difference becomes more evident.

I owned an Onyx before the Adagio and that wasn't my finding. All Metrum DACs are as neutral as neutral can be; there is no colour or restrained sound. If that's what you think you're hearing then the DAC isn't responsible.

I was asked (by @franz12) for my experience, and I replied it openly and honestly. It is the reason why I chose to return the Onyx despite being offered to keep it at a discount.

Lets get back on track.
:)

I'm patiently waiting for my Pavane especially since I have an Ambre coming this week. With some decent cables, I am ENDING my audio spending as I will have my end game desktop system:

Mac Mini - ethernet/Roon
Ambre - AES
Pavanne - dual 3-pin balanced
Violectric V281 - 4-pin balanced
abyss 1266 phi cc/audeze i4.
