AKG's new K872?

I hope to have my K872s in a couple weeks. When I get them.. I'll try to put up a quick comparison to my LCD-XCs.

Xeroeth,

I’ve heard the LCD-XCs a while back – great sound, but these phones were much too heavy for my likings – nearly 700 gr.
(the 872 and the new Ether flows seem to have the same weight of approx. 400 gr.)

Certainly looking forward to your findings of what sound quality they are !

Greetings from Zürich
Urs

Anxiously waiting for some reviews of the k872 to come out. I love it when manufacturers make an open and closed version of their headphones (ether c, lcd xc, el8, t5p)
Hopefully akg tuned the sound of the closed version differently to fix the treble peaks of the k812 and reduce some of that bass.

The K812 has too much bass? I think the lower mids / high bass could be tamed (from 100 hz to 600 hz) but mid bass is about right, or could shift down (for a bit less at 80 hz, and a bit more below 40 hz where it rolls off a bit too much). Just my opinion.

Agree on the treble, the 9-10 khz spike is typical and it could be 1-2 db less, at 6 khz it needs to be flattened. The dip between about 1 khz to 3 khz could be lifted, a little. A slight dip there keeps it from being shouty, but that much loses important detail.

Yes they have too much bass for me (key words: for me), the k812 is definitely above neutral which I understand some enjoy. The Q701 is what I consider to have a neutral bass response.
Others may disagree, but I still think the Q701 strikes the perfect tonal balance from AKG's line of headphones, it makes up for the lack of bass from the k701 without overdoing it like the k712/k812, and still sounds exciting while having a more coherent frequency spectrum. I personally do not like the direction of leaving behind the mids and upping the bass response but even then, a closed back flagship from AKG has me yearning

AKG certainly won't break my bank if the price of the K872 is above $899.00 MSRP. I will simply opt for the Focal Elear or save up for the MrSpeakers Ether Flow. I know the aforementioned alternatives are both open back HP's but as the K812 is described now I know it's not something I'm willing to gamble on.

Enjoy!!!

Some probably feel the K501 had too much bass. It's one's perception and preference.

Please let us know when you receive them. My AKG dealer has now advised me they won't receive them until mid-September, which probably means mid-December, which probably means March 2017. AKG originally scheduled them for May/June 2016.

Mine is saying mid-September as well now.

Update: they were just delivered, won't have a chance to listen to them until next week tho.

They need to do a revision of K812 (and a revision of K872 too)...it's a shame that a flagship headphone from a company with more than 2000 employees doesn't have dual connectors for balanced cables, also K812 doesn't mesure well (is marketed for professionals, it should be neutral with almost flawless measurements).

Competition has upped his game, Focal Elear, new LCD-2 revision or Stax L700 are very, very serious headphones.
K812 and K872 have a beautiful industrial design, but they need to improve a lot (didn't heard K872 but if it is a closed back version of K812, it will sound very similar)

My favorite AKG to date is still the K7XX [and a serious bargain at that], or either of the K702 65th Anniversary / K712, which are very similar toe ach other. The K812 was indeed a disappointment... So I hope the K872 isn't just a closed K812. I seriously hope AKG makes an improved K7xx series. With the MDR-Z1R around the corner, as apotential R10 successor [I also dig the MA900 a lot] and the likes of Focals, Kennertons, Mr. Speakers, HiFiMANs and more, this year has been a blast of new exciting headphones, so perhaps AKG will step up.
