Checking in with a K1000.
Love it!

Philodox,

The AKG 240M is what I own. I'm not particularily enamoured with them, but they are quite decent. Smooth. Bass seems a bit muddy (I'm used to AKG 271s and 701 sound). They are musical. They might grow on me as I listen to them more.

The K340s interest me immensely. The mods for them are mind boggling. I'm wondering, do I eventually score a pair of K340's or do I just jump to Stax? Oh well, I'm not in a hurry to score another pair of headphones having just got the 701's recently.

Cheers!

Ah, the one I forgot. I've never heard the M's, but they are reported to be a little bland sounding.

The mods are actually fairly simple, but for peace of mind, I'd rather get a 'professional' to do it.

Don't rush into anything, especially if you are happy with what you have now. I look at the move to Stax as more of a sidestep than a jump personally. If you invest the amount of money that you'd put into a electrostat rig into your dynamic rig I'd imagine the gains would be greater. Both systems do certain things better than the other at 'the top' so it's really a matter of preference.

how would you folks say the 271 MkII stack up as reference headphones for a budget

Newly anointed AKG fanboy here. Fell in love with my 240S within 20 seconds of listening. Just mated them to a lil BSG custom amp and wow! BTW how does the k181 DJ compare SQ wise with the 240S?

Picked up a pair of second hand K701 for $150 recently.
Joining the fold.
Burning in the Shanling PH100 with it.
I reckon its sound signature is growing on me. Initially felt the lost of the top end sparkle that I got from my AD700.
The AD700 is now starting to sound a little thin and strange.....

I'm jealous! New to the love fest here too. I'm enjoying some classic jazz at the moment with my 240 studios after a good burn in with some loud rock and hip hop. They improved a lot after the burn in! Can anyone tell me if the old 240M's with the high impedance(600ohms i think) were better than the new ones with the 55ohm impedance. I have a chance to pick up a pair of the old ones, and will do so if they were significantly better, which I heard they were(maybe in this thread?). I'm pretty sure my emu 0404 audio interface would have enough power to drive them.

I just snagged a pair of the K601s that HeadRoom was discontinuing... for a nickel shy of a mean $90, shipped.

I've never owned AKG before, but for that price, I'll gladly join the party to see what's going on in here...

That is one crazy deal. The K601's will sound amazing for that price, let alone sounding amazing anyway.

I got in on that sale too, so now my membership into team AKG includes...

AKG K340 - Heavily modded one owner phone that I purchased new in '85. Balanced Black Clover cables by Fitz

AKG K240 - Sextett LP - Put together by Fitz from multiple donor phones, and near mint looking. Balanced Black Clover cables by Fitz

AKG K601 - Most likely will be cabled balanced, maybe a driver transplant?

Absolutely loving my AKG K701s.

The 701s are being driven by a Benchmark DAC1 (used as DAC and Headphone Amp) with a Squeezebox Classic as my Streaming Transport...
