AKG K812 Pro

Any decent desktop amps?

I cannot stand being tied to a desk. Having a portable "stack" is also on my no list, therefore I strictly look for DAPs and headphones they can drive. I am 100% DAP/headphone. Having things shoved into my ears is another non-starter, therefore I also have no IEMs.

I am comparing the Meze Empyreans to my AKG K812 headphones with a Lotoo Paw Gold and a QP1R. I am actually quite shocked at the moment, because I personally like the way my AKG headphones sound over the Empyreans. I am not going to post this on the Empyrean thread because I don't want to get shredded LOL

Can you qualify the differences you are hearing and why you prefer the K812?

To me it seems like the detail retrieval is better on the K812, while at the same time sounding more musical and lively. I like the treble extension better and don't hear obnoxious peaks many complain about. I also think the sound stage is more expansive. They are both equal in comfort. I also thought bass hit harder on the k812 without being flabby. Don't get me wrong, the Empyrean is an excellent headphone. I'm just blown away at how good the K812 is at the price. The Empyreans just seemed a little too polite throughout the entire frequency range...

Interesting that you note that the bass is better on the K812; what are you driving them with? Also, what kind of music do you listen to?

I am using a Lotoo Paw Gold 2017 and a QP1R. I primarily listen to stuff like Rush, Yes, metal, and a lot of jazz and smooth jazz. I was all prepared to like the Empyrean more than the K812... that did not work out. Price and sound are definitely not linear relationships.

Agreed, honestly, after about $1,000 your paying for sound signature specifics, design and accesories. From the way I've heard the Empy described its probably not for me so I'm glad the K812 is (probably) going to be a better match.

So since picking these up pretty much all 30 of my other headphones have been hung up (mostly mid-tier) After several weeks these have really opened up. Like WOW.... for a 36 ohm headphone I have the dial on my Schiit Valhalla 2 turned up like 2/3 of the way. Baba Yetu on Christopher Tin's Calling all Dawns album sound amazing on these. I'm curious on why these get such a bad rep so I plan on buying another Summit-fi can to compare.. Most likely the HD800S..
