AKG K812 Pro

Using K612 and K712 especially, my ears seem to be happy with treble peaks at 7khz and 10khz. I actually find HD650 and its 5Khz spike to be shouty and fatiguing. 8khz is another pain.

The question is, would i find the K812 offensive? i read a lot of comments regarding bright and piercing treble but other people say its treble is not as sharp as K712 but i dont find any sharp treble at all on K712, very nice to listen to.

The K812 has the metallic treble known of AKG, but the sound is well balanced, not offensive. Soundstage is the best out of 20+ headphones I have tried - huge. The articulation is not very fast but natural. For fast symphonic music, some planar magnetic are a lot faster and authoritative, but too robotic. The K812 is a little on the slower side but it is not a big problem. Great imaging/separation. Great headphone. Also, I did not try the HD800 but many people I have read prefer the K812. Something like HD800s>K812>HD800.

My AKG K812 is not as warm or relaxed as my former AKG K712.
K812 is less forgiving with poorly recorded material.

The treble tonality on my K812 is closer to my K701 than my former K712.
My K812 peaks at around 6.5kHz while my former K712 peaks at around 7.2kHz (which gives a slightly different tonality)
Treble extension is slightly better on the K812.

Keep in mind K812 is considerably more forward in the 2.5kHz to 4.5kHz region.

My impression of K812 improved when I tried it in February at Harman Kardon in NYC. With a good amp and DAC, it sounds great. If you can get it for ~$500, it's definitely worth it. Nice all-rounder for classical music. I recall preferring it to HE-6.

I cannot get it for $500 or £380, but it has dropped a lot here down from £980 / $1,300 to £650 / $850

Thats the lowest i have ever seen them here. HD800S on the other hand ouch £1,400

they wont be used for classical or jazz, i only listen to metal. something with a bigger soundstage than K712 would be nice.

$500 for a K812 Pro? That's insane. This is one of very few recent flagships I haven't listened to, but it used to always be pitted against the HD 800 and Beyer T1. I would've bought one for $500 if I wasn't about to not have any amplifier for it haha.

Feel free to share a few of your preferred recordings (you can simply name the songs and artists)
Some of us might be able to try them on our AKG K812 and share a few comments about the pairing.

My same opinion.

K712 - for relaxed hearing, but with a bit less details
K812 - does not forgive sharpness in recording, more details, more air between instruments.

I had a good pairing K812 and Jan Meiers Corda Classic-ff - this offers a bit lesser sharpness. Jan Meier had loan me a sample for test.

About three weeks ago I scored the 2014/2015 Sony Z7 Flagship for $360. It was an open box at a Sony Flagship store. At first seeing it I was skeptical but seeing none of the cables were even unwrapped, I guessed it was “as new”.

Probably the antithesis of the AKG K812 Pro, it needs the correct amp to get away from issues. Still with the right amp it’s now one of my favorite headphones. At around a $700 retail it’s not quite the price drop you see here with the K812 selling for $500.

Becuase i can only find it as lowest $850 in UK i think ill skip this one and keep with K712 a little longer, i dont feel comfortable having a picky headphone if i change gear often. Not sure there is going to be something like a K912 now Samsung own them. Are the original engineers still working at AKG?

As far as I recall, some of them founded a new company called Austrian Audio

Correct. The development team of the K812 has left AKG more than 1 year ago. So no K912 I guess...
But from what I've heard Samsung is very interested in doing something special under the AKG brand, keeping with the tradition. IFA could be interesting. I hope...

The old original AKG development team, now resides in Austrian Audio, could develop new premium headphones (as contract work) for Samsung/Harman/AKG too. :):beerchug:
