The K701s I auditioned last Saturday had been burned in for more than 300 hours ,
I didn't find them harsh or edgy, no in contrary rather refined in the highs, but maybe a bit cold in the upper midrange.
So there really is hope your K701s will change in the next 200 hours.
The gear chamix and I were using was rather warm and balanced sounding, this might be important as well.

Yeah well I think ESI Juli@ is quite neutral and Rudistor isn't warm. I've been thinking about the source and amping also. That could cause the harshness and brightness. I've heard that Rudi would use 650s as his reference phones(?) and they're very dark and warm.

How does the K701, compare to the Sony MDR-CD3000. I ask this, because it is my favorite set of cans, and the K701's would be my next step in headphones.

The CD3000s are very... unique. I would suggest based on the impressions of other CD3000 fans that you really won't know if you like the K701 until you listen to it.

Yeh, I was afraid you would say that. Unfortunetly, I will have to wait for another NY meet. I doubt any retail store would have them up for demo!!

On contrary, I found that the K701 are certainly not lacking behind DT880's bass ... they might even have better bass than DT880. So, I'm curious, what's your amp/source?

edit: ~100 hours of burn-in here.

Thought of the night (i am in italy). The 701 is like the Sennheiser Hd650 with much more Soundstage (deep and large), much more air (space between the tools), and much more sweetness, and much more details

Question for the K701 owners..

How is the leakage on the 701? I found it pretty bad on the 501.

I wouldn't describe it as "harder." I bought the 701s expecting it would easily replace my 501s, but this is not the case at all. The 701 is not a "better 501," but a different sounding headphone altogether.

Have you tried the K701 pads on the K501's? Just curious if this could be a future upgrade path on the 501's along with my recabling job.

I don't know if they leak as much as K501 but during the burn-in session, I could hear them "singing" even if I was couple of meters away from them.

I'm using microdac + sr71. My HF-1 has more bass than the k701s, although the bass on the hf-1 is loose as a whore (ala cheap subwoofer) -- the 701's is way tighter and better quality, but certainly less than the DT880. I'm pretty confident that the 880 wins in the bass department.

What are referring to when you say "better bass"? I'm venturing a guess that the K701 has more bass and quantity of punch, but is less tight and controlled about it. Is that how it is?

You could also take advantage of HeadRoom's demo period.

Hi, bahamot!

atx's experience was 180 degrees opposite from yours, in terms of which phones had more bass — his being 880s over 701s and yours being 701s over 880s. He uses Headroom MicroDAC + SR-71 … what components (as well as power source & cord if not batteries, and interconnects) do you use?

GS-1 here with 1212m (bypass mod) as source and Canare starquad as IC. My audio files are at least 192kbps for mp3 and some others are FLACs or APEs.
