so can anyone compare K701 and UE10 Pro in terms of transparency?

K701 sounds a lot like UE10 Pro except the big soundstage of course.

Just got my K-701 today. Can't say too much until after proper burn-in, but they're on my head right now, and I'm enjoying them; definitely the high class reference sound I expected. I've always been a Grado and Ety user and I've got no complaints about bass, detail, or dynamics. These things do a lot of things well, and I expect to have more to say after 100 or so hours.

All the comments by Yikes make me wait these headphones soo much. All the comments haven't been so positive though. At least Sovkiller's impressions were quite negative. But fortunately there has been a lot more positive comments.

Better/evenly detailed than SA5000? Man that was nice to hear. Have you listened any more hard-rock/metal with them? I'd like to know more about K701's abilities to perform those music genres.

Anyone else been past the 'wow' factor for a while and now choose phones based on less exciting merits like what they don't do wrong? As sad as it sounds (focus on the negative instead the positive) it seems I move more and more in that direction. I want to like Grados. I want to like Sonys. I end up with Etys and Senns. Kinda miss the 'blown away' feeling, but happier long term with the "other kind" of phones.

I always enjoy Sovkillers posts. I've learned a great deal from them, but as someone who's disagreed often with his HD6X0 v. CD3K posts, this is very good to hear.

Got off the phone with Todd earlier this afternoon. He's already shipped 20 K701s in total. Is expecting 6-10 more any day now which includes my pre-order!

yay overnight...

got all my parts for my dynalo yesterday from Digi-Key/Mouser/BDEnt so i was franticly working on that every time i got some downtime at work... finished that up, got home and hooked up the dynalo and the K701's... man, these things kick ass...

these have to be some of the nicest cans ive ever heard, amazing detail, the great AKG mids are there, along with nice highs... only thing so far is if you play something extremely bass heavy like techno or something it seems to annihilate/distort the midbass, i noticed this a lot more on my pimeta than the dynalo also, but this is to be expected i guess, my K1000's rolled off before the real lows so its never been something i really notice...

im loving the detail/resolution tho... almost K1000 detail levels, not quite there but still very impressive... in some songs some instruments im used to hearind seem really far away, especially strings in a large orchestra sound overpowered by the brass instruments

also stupid question, is that number on the right side of the headband the serial number?

impedance // efficiency

501: 120 ohms // 94 dB SPL/mW
601: 120 ohms // 102 dB/V
701: 62 ohms // 105 dB/V

based on its specs alone, it should be very easy for portables to drive... The Koss Porta Pros are 60 or 70 ohms and their SPL is 100 dB/V and they are pretty easy to drive. the 701 by spec alone should produce better results (volume wise) than the PP's. But they'll probably need a small amp to really shine...

Same goes with bass. The bass is part of the entire presentation, but when it's thumpin' time, a good can busts out a bottom bursting riff that makes you go "WHA?" This is better than cans that flab that bass all over the spectrum and muddy the whole thing up all the time, ugh.

In a word, what you want is balance, one of my biggest criteria for headphones.

Most of the music is in the midrange anyway, so phones with dominant treble or dominant bass upsets the natural sonic presentation, whatever that is. I don't doubt the Grado PS1 have a lot of detail, but that overpowering bass drove me so nuts when I first listened to them, I had! to take them off.

I seem to handle energetic treble better, but I prefer it to be crystal clear (as in "free from distortion!") rather than sneaky treble screecher phones that have slight distortion and serves to fatigue your ears over time. A phone with crystal clear highs (eg, AKG K501) can be worn for hours without fatigue.

wow. I got a nice pair of akg 501s w/ a custom amp that has variable bass boost. anything I throw at them comes back sublime. I could not be happier with them but of course omg the 701s rule! jeez it never ends. fyi for long term low volume listening the akgs are the best I could ever recommend.

going to get the 701s when my wife isn't looking lol

Depends on the AKG... I much prefer my K340's loud.
