Hi, looks like as AKG also releases a new top of the line closed headphone - the K550 with 32 ohms / 1/4" gold jack .

It's listed in their new official 2011 catalogue, which can be downloaded here:

It is positioned above the K701, as you can see here in exerpts from the brochure:

i have no info about prices or release date, just stumbled about it by chance. looks interesting, though.

What the...they changed the headband?! All they needed to do, really, was get rid of the humps on the elastic. That elastic and headband didn't last that long for no reason; but if people the last ones were uncomfortable, it was those humps, not the original design.

Evil !!!!  I'll this one and call it quit.

When I first saw the thread title I had hoped maybe they had re-released the K501 again or updated it. Maybe it sounds similar to the K501? Who knows.

Hopefully it's not too expensive.

Why is everyone suddenly comparing it to the K702? We don't even know anything about and even if it's supposed to be "better" than the K702.

I also had seen it yesterday, and asked in AKG facebook. No any information given from AKG though...
550 looks like closed-back, but they call it open-sound.
I predict it semi-open... maybe something like S-Logic gives wider stage?
Earpad seems to be REALLY HOT. I'll not use it during summer if i buy it.

The elasticated headband within the dual arches assembly AKG are famous for is not very practical for portable use. This lower profile version looks more suited to wearing out, and its specs suggest it'll work well with a portable device. Keeping an eye on this one...

No way I'm buying a $300+ headphone without a detachable cable. I think it's too early to know for sure if it's really the "top of the line" AKG headphone.
I'm very curious about this and hope it's not too expensive.
