AKG k550 alternate ear pads?
Apr 20, 2016 at 7:36 AM Post #91 of 173
Been quite some time since I've posted on here.

Looking for replacement pads for K550s now.

I contacted AKG via phone after an email. They said the Left + right earpads with tax and shipping would be $49.90...

Said they were basically $20.06 each.

I have no clue how they doubled in price. The guy had trouble finding the correct price so I am going to shoot another email just to confirm.

That is a bit pricey really I posted the links and info on the top of this page and got mine a year ago for £20 pounds so about $30 dollars and that was with shipping so yeah almost doubled in price after a year is crazy.

I do not know if any fellow AKG 550 owners have tried any of those china replacement pads like these here:

There are tons of AKG 550 replacement pads on ebay and very cheap like £4-8 for both just no idea if any good.

I had to buy a headband scarf since mine was loosing some of its pleather bits

Overall still lovely closed and well sealed cans but the headband and pleather pads not ideal, I wish blueprint got back to me on if those alphapad alternative lambskin pads keeps the noise sealed in or not !

Focus Pads on AKG?

May 30, 2016 at 9:25 AM Post #96 of 173
I've got both K550 and a HE500 with focus pads. Hifiman headphones use a plastic ring to secure the pads onto the headphones. On the stock HE500 pads the ring is removable and the pads can stretch onto the K550. On the focus pads however, this plastic ring is glued into the earpads. So, it will only work if you can find a way to gently un-glue that plastic ring from the focus pads.

Has anyone tried the alcantara pads from Shure? Kinda pricy but apparently they fit the  Fostex T50RP just fine which means they should fit the AKG 550 too?

Just looking for some pads that give a bit better seal without getting too thick like the Brainwavz HM5 pads

I've tried the HM5 pads on my k550, but the seal was too good, so they created some vacuum effect and my ears started to clog up. Still trying to find new pads for these headphones, so I ordered some Beyerdynamic dt770 pads, should arrive this week. Also trying the velour angled HM5 pads (originally planned to replace HD558 pads, but might try on k550 as well). I just can't stand it when my ears are hitting the inside of the driver-shell, bah.. :p

A week ago I put Brainwavz angled pleather pads on one of my K550s, and I really like them.  They give a lot more breathing room between my ears and the drivers than the stock pads do, but don't have the excessive bass-light/treble-heavy tilt that the Brainwavz flat pads did (for me at least).

Had to stretch the Beyer dt770 pads so much to get them to fit that the sound got ruined. Thinny and weak, but comfort is now much better... The search continues, I guess :D

Edit: Might actually stick with this for now, sound is actually ok and comfort is at another level...

Guys what you think about velour pads?
Will velour pads emphasize heights and kill bass?

Depends on what kind of pads, some velour pads are a lot better at keeping bass and some are just ruining everything closed cans should do.

So it depend more on type foam?
Or velour and skin/hair contact?
