AKG K340 ? Are they for me ?

One thing for sure though: they need some really powerful amp (not necessary expensive, mind you) to reach its potential. Once you have that covered, it's all about how much time you want to spend modding it. To me, it's definitely worth the price of admission

They can compete with any headphone out there, save perhaps the HE90. I do like their midrange better though, so I suppose they can even compete with them.

For $130 I would say snatch them up... but you are going to want to replace that LDII pretty damn quick.

Hello,

Personally, it's my favorite headphone.

But i haven't a large experience, it's true... Not yet

I quite agree, a powerfull amp is necessary (i hesitating between a AUDIO VALVE RKV II or RUDISTOR RP7)

greetings

hehe... (LD2++ that is) but really... would they be that dull with my LD2++ ? because then a DT770 or something like that might be more like the stuff i needed to get... hm.. hard to decide..

I think the K340s are one of the great headphones out their (mine are the same as philodox's) . That being said they take some modding, and some care has to be taken, as far as amping.

They take alot of power. Philodox is right in saying they take almost as much volume knob power on my amp as the K1000s.

Not the best example but with my stepped volume attuenuator. HD 650s the 2nd or 3ed. (7:00 O Clock) step huge volume and soundstage. K 340s almost 11:00 O Clock. K 1000s 1:00 O Clock then open the K 1000s wings 2 or 3 O clock all this at a meet in NY 2 weeks ago

not the best place but just an idea.

K 340 sound when propery amped. Sound stage is huge

the highs are as clean and effortless as headphones can get.

Mids are right where they should be very neutral, true to the CD and CDPer.

The bass is great surprissing at times because the mids are so well ballanced you might say these sound like they are a little bass shy then put something on with a nice bass line and wow.

Impact and dynamic is also suprising, eye blinking if you put in the right CD and turn it up just a little bit. Remember turn it up a click on the volume does little on such a power loving headphone as the K 340.

The ability of this headphone to pick up small details is also increadable.

Nice headphone. A little heavy, sweaty (hot in summer) and not as secure as say my HD 650. So no quick moves with these on.

Markmaxx - great description i think... seems like a lot of the features i like.. even though i could be somewhat conserned about my amp and its ability to run these power-eaters...

Your LD is not a good choice for either 770's or certainly not k340. Darths or dt770 want the drier signature of a Corda (eg. HA-2) SS amp .............and k340 need plenty of juice and a slightly tubey sound of a P.S. Audio GCHA, Raptor, or Opera (with gain raised). Sorry for your wallet............if you wanted go the other direction and find something to team with LD - you might consider dt880.

The K1000's are basically speakers, so they sound great straight out of a speaker amp. If I was building a K1000 setup I would get a really nice SET tube amp and be done with it.

The K340 needs tons of voltage swing [400ohms] and tons of current [low sensitivity]... it is really hard to get an amp that puts out the power they need and retains the delicate touch that they deserve. It becomes a bit easier when you move into balanced configurations, but that adds a fair bit of expense. Quote:

Sounds like you need to tighten or replace your elastics. Have you tried the velour earpads and/or the K501 headband? I find that they help with fit/comfort/heat on my pair.

The K340 is one of those select headphones where one must build a system around it rather than hoping it will slot into an existing system and make everything better. To use an analogy, placing a K340 into an unoptimized system is like driving a Ferrari in downtown traffic, sure you get a little taste but you come nowhere close to knowing what it can do, to properly appreciate a Ferrari one needs to drive it on a racetrack or at the very least an Autobahn.

It's a commitment and a journey, and only you can know if you're ready for it.

Glite and K340 is not the best combo, I have it and you need it cranked up really high to get much out of it.

My GL can blow the lid off any other cans I have, but the k340.. it struggles
