AKG K280 initial impressions, and questions

what about the mids?

Raising the pads and adding extra foam like that should change the sound for better or worse.  You might just try getting new K240 pads from AKG

Since they leak sound so much, I need a good quiet session to really get into them, but I have posted an initial impression review on the Head Gear part of the forum.

Presently listening to The Small Faces Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake. This is the album to use to hear the four different drivers working.

You take super photos JandH and they look to be in brilliant condition.

thx :) they are really in nice condition (i need only to repair pads, as they are bit flat).

do someone know if there is a crossover inside?? or the drivers are just playing the same? (if no1 know I'll consider disassembling them:)

There must be a crossover. The Small Faces 'Ogdens Nut Gone Flake' album has loads of stereo effects and you can at times hear each speaker playing different parts of the track.

well.. just checked it... there is NO crossover whatsoever :/ I'm pretty suprised about that - seems like there are two fullrange drivers. wiring looks like this (sorry for my drawing skills)

So the two divers get the same signal? Then how have I heard distinctly different sounds in the one ear?

I don't think there's a cross-over either.  I mean it uses 2 of the same drivers, what would a crossover do?  It's not like it has a tweeter and a woofer like the K340.  I think the affect you're hearing is an illusion caused by the really good imaging abilities of the phone.

That being said, the K290 Surround came with a special amp thingie so that it could play surround sound.  So in that case I imagine the two drivers were getting different signals.  But only with the box.  My K290 was rewired into stereo.  Prog Rock, you don't find the midrange lacking?  I felt the mids weren't coherent and the phones didn't transition from bass-mids-highs well at all, like there were some gaps in there.

I suspect that my taste in music suits the K280s. Prog and post rock ranges all over the place and much of it is not the traditional midrange of vocals/guitar supported by bass and treble rhythm.

I would recommend you try 'Ogdens Nut Gone Flake', as a sonic experience.

someone was writing about ears touching the baffle - underneath the pads there is a ring with a foam glued underneath it (same material as Monitors) - if the foam is rotten (usually is) its get flatter and makes your ears touching the baffle. replacing it as well as replacing/repairing the pads solves the problem.

It was me and I got out my old Grado rings that come with the headphones, which I have never used as I prefer the flat pads. I trimmed them and pushed them under the K280's pads, which has raised them just enough there is no problem now. I have not noticed any change in the sound.
