AKG's model designations confuse me somewhat, as I mentioned in Germancub's thread on the K271 MK II. The 242HD is, according to AKG, the next iteration of the K240S, and I have read favorable reviews but seen no feedback from someone who actually owns a pair. Anyone ?

Amazon.com just started selling them a few weeks ago, so maybe the reviews will start coming out. I'm looking for replacements for my old MDR-1700's and were considering the K 272's.

I have not heard them for long enough yo give you a solid view, however, I think the 40 series always sond better the the 70 series, The 242 are easier to drive, No extra cable, or pads, but very comfy. The latest hd series are slightly less transparent. Just barely.
A sure sign the headphone industry is fully aware that the state of recordings has generally went down hill. I find the 701's while great cnas, suffer on poorly recorde music....honesty can be too much when the truth hurts.

I have been looking at a pair of AKG K 242HD for $280 and a pair of AKG K701 for $258. I read that the search never ends said that the 701 did not sound good with poorly recorded and I listen to lossless on my zune HD. If anyone knows which is a better deal it would be greatly appreciated.

Those K242HD's are the only ones from them that I haven't heard yet.  I'd be curious how they compare to past K240 models, and the K501/601/701 too.
 
I am personally not a fan of the 601 or 701, but some of the K240 models sound very good to me.
