Absolute best headphone for mids?

Stock K340 has almost mythical amount of midrange "lifeforce." It's decidedly rolled off in treble, almost defiantly so, but it's so enjoyable, much more than many "neutral" cans out there. Lovingly modded K340 keeps the magic and opens up the top and space enough to push over my K1000 when I want to bask in midrange magic. If you don't enjoy the heck out of your favorite vocals on modded K340, it really doesn't matter b/c you're probably already dead or don't like music..

Also, there are headphones that have great natural mids (HD-650's) and headphones with a colored midrange, but still sound pleasant. Are there any colored headphones that have a great euphoric midrange as wel? I guess one of the ATH headphones would fit that, (although i do not feel that the W100's are too colored)

How do the L3000 mids sound?

you could try Rs-1's. The L3000's have a midrange which is similar to the w2002's. Where this differs is that the L3000 mids are smoother. But compared to w100's they are not warm. Although partnering with a warm amp would give them a warmer sound. From a personal point of view I would of liked the L3000's to have a bit more warmth in the mids. I am not talking Rs-1 type warmth.

I really notice the lack of warmth on live accoustic tracks. Even though the L3000's are technically better than the w100's in most areas the w100 still sounds the warmer on live accoustic tracks.

Best that I've heard is the HE60 from the 007t. I've never heard an HE90 though

Next up would be the HP2/HP3000, Omega II w/KGSS, and K1000. They all have a certain seductive quality that goes beyond "neutrality," and whether it is transparency or coloration, I don't know. I find that this type of midrange really only comes out with well-recorded music, especially classical.

Of all the phones that I have the AKG 501s and the Senn 600s have the best mids.Even better when used with a good tube amp.

Can't believe I overlooked this thread for so long.

I have not heard the Leatherheads, but out of what I have heard, the K340 is far superior to any other headphone when it comes to mids. I have only heard my modded pair though, so I can't really say if they are that good stock. I did hear aerius' for a bit before he got out the soldering iron, but my memory of the event is not that clear. It is very important that these headphones are amplified well... With poor amplification these are good headphones. With great amplification they are incredible.

Should be, but I'm not sure. I heard mine out of a Dynalo once, but the gain was too low. With a high gain Dynalo/Gilmore Lite it should be fine.

I really like the HD 650 lower midrange, the AKG K1000's "middle" midrange and the Beyerdynamic DT 880's upper midrange. The RS-1 has a midrange that sounds too coloured for me on 90% of the songs but with the remaining 10%, it's absolutely seductive! The PS-1 also had a very liquid sounding and super-clean midrange that's hard to resisit. Tough call really.

I can't say much about the high priced electrostatics as I have not heard them.
However, of the commonly available Sennheiser (600, 650), Grado (SR 225, 325, RS-2's), and AKG's, I'm very fond of my K501s, especially with a tube amp. I really think they got the midrange right. When you've the mids right, life is easy!

Hehe, I listen to Ella Fitzgerald - Sings The Cole Porter Song Book [1995 DCC Gold] with the RS-1 right now.

That's pretty much what I was going to say, but also the K240S has a really sweet midrange.

Nice thread. As for now, I really enjoy my HD-650 w/ Zu in midrange the most. I hope my soon-to-arrive L3000 will change that.
