I won't compare my knowledge on this subject to yours - you win hands down, but some of the things you (and many others) don't like about the K701s, are the things I like about them - strange as that may seem! That certainly doesn't mean they are better headphones, more accurate, detailed, etc. than those you have compared them to in your review - just a personal preference sound wise based on what I have tried to-date. I also owned Stax SRx headphones for many years - they killed my ears with their forward presentation!

I guess I will have to buy more headphones before I can even give a reasonable opinion on this. My wallet thanks you!

x2. For me the AKG K702 and prog rock with all its genres and fusions work perfectly.

I have both and enjoy both.

I do agree with the stated flaws of the 70x model.

Though I hear a large improvement in detail from the SR225, I can only enjoy the akg 702 with some types of music.

As far as unamped that is.

Did you not read my positive comments on Page #1. Where they not glowing enough for you?

When I say beginners, I mean if it's your first pair and you don't have any other reference point, then the K702 will not necessary will fulfill your wet dream (especially out of the box and before the burn in). Also some of the tube amps are not so great with the K70X. I'll recommend to any one that reads this to try out a few systems with the 70X and see what is the one that you like the most because they can change a lot from system to system. And I mean a lot.

Meh...I'll throw in my two cents here.

I think that this sums the K70x up quite nicely. The soundstage is really wide, and instrument separation and detail are great, but for me the major downfall was the "limited applicability with multiple music genres." While I loved the K702s I had for some specific genres (classical, jazz, folk, and acoustic guitar), they didn't perform nearly as well for others (rock, metal). I think the K70x are specialist headphones -- as a result, I don't think I could ever be happy having the K70x as my only pair of headphones. They are a great complement to something bassier and better for rock, such as Denon's higher-end headphones.

This is about the only point of the review I'd disagree with. I do agree that Grados are more forward than the K70x, but from my experience I would say the HD650s are more laid-back.

That is correct. The reviewer owns the Q10 & auditioned some of the best headphones ever created.

Before hearing them in a balanced setup I was about to give up on them. Balanced they are a totally different headphone with plenty of bass and midrange detail and no harshness at all.

Strongly agree about the balanced setup, absolutely brilliant headphones.

I knew that it was someone else's opinion once reading the final comments on the first post, but I can see how some people could have missed that (the whole thing is in first person, after all). I'd probably edit the first post and start it off in the beginning to make it clear that you're posting someone else's opinion.

I never found K701 interesting enough to keep over an AD1000PRM, they are about on-par on detail but the PRM is faster and more exciting (maybe coloured to perform as such)
