MacRumors.com - October 12th Media Event
News

Apple's managed to block most of the Mac web from updating live. We tip a hat to Apple for finding a location without cellphone or wireless access. Here's information gathered thus far.

New iMac, new Video iPod, new Apps.

- iMac: faster, larger disk, built in iSight. Includes FrontRow (app)
- iPod: 30GB/60GB with Video - realtime decoding of MPEG4 and H.264. 260,000 colors. Video out.
- FrontRow and PhotoBooth Apps.
- 30GB iPod: $299 - 31% thinner than current 20GB; - 60GB iPod: $399.
- New iPods avail next week. Comes with case
- iMac: $1299 for 17" model with 1.5GHz, $1799 for 20" model with 2.1GHz
- iTunes 6 to be released
- Front Row - comes with new iMacs. Lets you enjoy video/music/pictures from sofa. Everything still displayed on iMac screen. iPod-like remote. 6 button remote.
- Photobooth - appears to be slide show application.
- Music Videos. 2000 available to buy. $1.99 each.
- Can "gift" music to other people. Peer reviews and recommendation service.

MacRumors.com is doing an OK job as well, although not quite as good. engadget said the new iPods would come in 20GB and 60GB, which is probably a mistake--they are probably 30GB and 60GB. I suspect they'll have that fixed within 5 minutes, though...

iLounge's "live coverage" is just barely keeping up.

EDIT: iLounge has repeated engadget's claim of 20GB. The information that the traders I work with have said "300GB", which I can only assume is a typo for 30GB... it's still up in the air between 20 and 30, I guess.

From iLounge...

Front Row -- A new way to experience media. Music, photos, and video from Sofa. Remote control. Apple style. Looks like an iPod shuffle. Music interface from iTunes but with great full screen display.

New iPod announced -- 2.5-inch display, 320 x 240 resolution, MPEG-4 support, and video out. Engadget caught that they are 30% thinner than current full-size iPod. Will be available in 20GB and 60GB versions for $299 and $399, respectively.

iTunes 6 announced -- 2000 music videos available, $1.99 each.

My opinion.

I am seeing 30 gig in a couple of places. And the pics kind of back up the idea of 30 gig unit. Not sure though.

I was just about to post that one... this is very exciting, methinks.

Yeah, I intuit 30GB as well.

I am somewhat unsure of the concept of purchasing music videos from the iTunes Music Store. The concept of watching videos on the iPod is hardly ideal. I suppose this version of the iPod video should more appropriately be tilted, iPod TRL--for they both lack the ability to show quality music videos.

Best,

Mo' money innit?

No sign Macs will catch up with PCs anytime soon, esp with Vista next summer, Apple will be focusing on getting iPod to kill competitors

Adding video is the next step. There isn't much left that pods don't do now. Apart from damn USB OTG

Well, I suppose that's it--new iMac, new iPod, new iTunes. Really impressive actually, but I was hoping for some new PowerBooks as well.

I'm also a bit leery of buying videos, but $2 is not a terrible price for something to watch on the commute. TV out makes it a little more desirable.
