15 hours for the old 20GB color screen iPod. And that was an underestimate. It's the thicker 60GB model that gets 20 hours.

If you actually use the video feature the battery life will be a lot less than 20 hours obviously.

It looks like it will play generic H.264 and MPEG4 encoded video, not just things from the Apple Store. There's even already a church offering weekly sermons as weekly "vodcasts" for the new iPod.

Right, so the user can drag any .avi file into iTunes and it will appear in the video section?

I don't know if anyone noticed but it was mentioned in playlistmag.com that in addition to the new video capable iPods, there will be a reshuffling of the full size audio iPods. $299 for 40 GB and $399 for 80GB. I'm not sure how reliable this is since this is not mentioned in the updated Apple store.

iTunes has supported video in this way for the last couple of versions. Not every .avi is supported; only open standards (MPEG4, H.264) and Apple stuff (Quicktime, etc.); as far as I know Windows Media is not supported.

I think SJ's got to stop over-hyping these events. The iMac upgrade was a yawner for most. It's almost exactly like the one that's been sitting in my den for months except for the iSight, TV software, and a measly .1GH speed bump--none of which means a thing to most beyond possibly the dorm crowd.

The iPods are nice, but I see no compelling reason for anyone with a current color model to upgrade. I've bought them all in the past but I'll probably pass on this generation unless my 60 breaks before the next iteration is released. Maybe I'm just too fond of the Nanos to be impressed by these.
